most upsetting scene in a movie

I've got a thing about eyes too. There's a scene in Audition (Japanese horror movie), where a girl sticks needles in someone's eyes to torture him. I'm not normally that squemish, but that freaked me out for days!

You're not alone on that one.

We (a bunch of researchers at Aberystwyth university) are doing a study of audience responses to five films which include scenes of sexual violence. The movies include Irreversible and Ich the Killer, both of which come up on this thread.

If you're interested in taking part, the online questionnaire is here:

The more opinions we get, the better!

Yes! I saw Song For A Raggy Boy! I know its only a movie but that scene where the priest flogs that poor bloody boy is a real heartbreaker. It stuck in my mind for ages!

I saw this film a few years ago after hearing about it so i watched it out of interest thinking it was gonna be just another dull film thats hyped up to much. I was really shocked by it though it was a really strongly shocking film, dont think i have ever seen a film like this one.

Cry Freedom - when Steve dies. all the more upsetting as this is the true story of Steve Biko and Donald WooRAB.

The Green Mile - JC is executed - agree with that, cant watch it without breaking my heart.

Hotel Rwanda - extremely upsetting film, again as it's a true story. The scene where the western journalists left made me so ashamed.

Seven - the end, Brad Pitt's character going from utter grief to rage and back again was so sad.

The Accused - the rape scene at the start.

Films that involve abuse of power, miscarriages of justice or any kind of sexual abuse I find really difficult to watch.
Also when Films are made based on real events its even worse as you can't distance yourself by saying "it's just a film"

In the film Jude, where the little boy overhears a conversation in which Kate Winslet says they family are struggling with money etc. The little boy kills himself and his siblings and leaves a note saying "because we were too many" (or worRAB to that effect)
Very sad film moment!

For me the most upsetting scene has to be the murder of the family by Henry and his friend in "Henry: Portrait of a serial killer".

The fact they were playing it back, having taped the murder, just made it look like a home movie, almost too realistic to watch.

The whole film (whilst great) was a harrowing incite into a psycopaths mind and was a hell of a lot scarier than your anti-hero type psycho like Hannibal Lector.

Don't know if it counts as a movie - a short film maybe, but my most upsetting scene is at the end of the Snowman where the boy comes out to find out he has melted - watched it every year for the past 20 years and it still makes me cry! (I even now get upset when the theme music comes on just because I know what is going to happen!)

wow I'm glad someone mentioned this one. Also the rape scene in The Vigilante. (Charles Bronson)

The Scenes with bald creep in Phantasm (shudder)

a french film called irreversible, there's 2 scenes.
a 10 minute rape scene, very graphic, and also a scene where a guy gets his faced stoved in by a fire extinguisher... also pretty brutal.

tough viewing, no cuts from the camera on either scene. seriously make sure you can stomach things like this before you watch it, it's very brutal, there's also a warning on youtube before you can watch :)
