Yeah. Both of those albums piss all over The Final Cut.
Man. From The Wall to The Final Cut, talk about a ridiculously huge plumet in quality. People who say The Wall is a Waters solo album are wrong, it isn't, Gilmour's presence is felt throughout. Gilmour is barely in The Final Cut, this album should have just been a bunch of angsty poems because that's really all it is, Waters stopped giving a damn about the musical aspect completely. I loved Waters vocals on Animals and The Wall but here he's so overbearingly mopey and I'm not even sure what the hell he's ranting about, and there's no Gilmour to provide any contrast, and not a single melody to be heard. It isn't terrible, but there's really no reason to listen to it, ever.
Well my feelings about Modest Mouse are well known. As for Yes, I think they are only underrated by people who underrate prog in general. Close to the Edge is the 68th highest rated album on Rate Your Music so they're not that underrated.
But you're totally right regarding Incubus, XTC and Gentle Giant.
