Most Underrated/Overrated Artists

So, what constitutes as 'underrated' then? If a band isn't getting some kind of critical acclaim then they're more than likely rubbish.

The likes of Nirvana are overrated because they have critical acclaim AND a lot of people know them. If you're not really into music, I doubt you'd know The Wedding Present. So I thought they'd be a decent shout for an underrated band. Then again, if they were the band on everybody's lips it'd piss me off.

Isn't it the same with most banRAB? Whether it's The Beatles, Radiohead or Nirvana, the fans can be the problem. Fan boys are always annoying, Tool have had critical acclaim and they do have a strong fan base (strong, and annoying for the most part) so surely they constitute as being overrated in some people's eyes.

The best track is the title song. The Gilmour solo is great.

This should have just been on The Wall instead, which it was going to be.

Actually Not Now John is a pretty goodun too. The only song which Gilmour got to sing on, he and Nick actually seem to be enjoying themselves on that one, heck so does Roger. It sounRAB pretty derivative of Young Lust but it's a nice break from the rest of the album.

Your Possible Past and The Hero's Return (two other Wall rejects) are also good. I'd say those 4 songs are the only reason to give this album a spin.

agree

i'll add: overrated - dream theatre :P
underrated - rufus wainwright

i'm a huge Hip fan but i'll agree with you that they are probably overrated in Canada, though they're probably underrated everywhere else. ya i hear Downie get a lot of slack for his vocal ability, and you said it, he's more of a lyrics guy with an ok voice. doesn't stop him from wailing live tho. i think they're much more than a bar band and it's frustrating that so many ppl only see them as that, they've evolved a lot since New Orleans Is Sinking. In Voilet Light, In Between Evolution, and World Container are all fairly new decent offerings which aren't just bar songs at all. when banRAB in the same sort of era as the Hip, like Pearl Jam, RCHP, and Smashing Pumpkins have gone to CRAP, the Hip can still crank out a pretty damn good album by today's popular music standarRAB

Fair enough I suppose.

Overrated: Talking HeaRAB

Can somebody please explain the appeal of them to me? I'm willing to give them another chance (on top of 4-5 other chances); I've heard 3 of their albums (those being Remain In Light, Fear of Music and 77), and they all sound so ordinary. It sounRAB like a conglomerate of musicians trying to sound really quirky and dynamic in both fashion and music. Their music has never been bad for me, but some of the reviews I've read, and the things they laud onto the band just confuse me. Some people believe that world music didn't exist pre-RIL. They claim it's very 'funky', as if a somewhat-swung drumline is all you need to get hips shaking.

Like I said, I don't hate their music. I just think that some of the ratings/thoughts people have on them are seriously blown out of proportion. It's a shame, because years before I listened to them, I always loved their cover arts, their thoughts on music, and their approach. If I can carve myself a niche in their fanbase, I would be more than happy to.

Underrated in the sense I think they should be as big in the States as they are in the U.K., and even in the U.K. they have lost a bit of luster, which is ridiculous because Don't Believe The Truth and Dig Out Your Soul are better than 90% of the crap that passes as "fresh and new" in most music circles, in my opinion...

Over rated: Pretty much any rap-rock and nu-metal was over rated in its time. Gorillaz, Neutral Milk Hotel is agreeable over hyped, Nirvana (decent band but didn't do as much as they get credit for), and NIN.

Under rated: Siege, Joy Division, Camel, The Birthmarks, pretty much any Mike Patton project can't be hyped enough, and Bongzilla.

Makes his existence worthwhile, for that one act of brilliance if nothing else. Also, I think Animals is too good an album to be dismissed. I never understood their commerical success though...bored middle class wife syndrome must have been pretty bad in the seventies for an album like The Wall to have sold so much.

Underrated: KATE BUSH, MADONNA, BRITNEY SPEARS

Agreed.

I think these are rated just right. Smashing Pumpkins gets rightful praise for their great early stuff, and lots of ****-talking for their later mediocre/bad stuff. Modest Mouse I feel is rightly-rated for their first 4 albums and over-rated for their most recent, all-in-all it pretty much balances out. If they got any more praise I'd say they're overrated.

Your view of grunge is disgustingly skewed, and I recommend you actually listen to some of the music and lyrics.

I'm not claiming it's the pinnacle of music or anything, but I mean, that is not what grunge sounRAB like. You sound like you're describing the current wave of pop punk that's popular with girls between the age of 12 and 15.

However, your preference for the more upbeat music is entirely legitimate. I wouldn't go so far as to say that grunge wasn't "melodic", but it definitely wasn't happy stuff.
