Most Overrated Films

Wow the gloves are off in this thread, make no mistake. Good on ya for going for broke. I can't agree with Raging Bull, the fight scenes are probably the most realistic I've seen in a boxing movie, and De Niro nailed the character. Just my opinion tho of course!
However I agree totally with Gladiator. The hype surrounding it was ridiculous, I trotted along to the flicks and thought "my God, is that it?". It's trying so desperately to be a throw back to the old Hestonesque Epics of old it just gets bogged down in clich

Citizen Kane - gets my vote. Every film critic seems to think it's the best film ever and I'm sure it was very revolutionary at the time but I found it very dull.

I hasten to add that it's nothing to do with being an old black and white films considered classics as I love "It's a Wonderful Life" and "12 Angry Men".

I must agree with the posters who think 'Withnail and I' is vastly over-rated. I don't think it's funny, or convincing in any way. I just don't understand what people see in it.

(On the other hand, I think 'This is Spinal Tap' is hilarious.)

Actually it's a psychological thriller with quite a complex plot and narrative structure, but if you were only looking for gore it would have gone over your head. If you think the killer was a puppet, then you really can't have been paying much attention.

It has some of the worst acting of the franchise, though. I think it is overrated by people who praise it and condemn the later films; for me the later films are less flawed.

OK then, what makes a truly shit film?

1. Historical inaccuracy
2. Racial stereotypes eg that all Brits are oily, objectionable snobs (nearly giving it away there);
3. One-dimensional characters that you don't give a shit about - whether they get the girl or get blasted to bits by aliens;
4. Costume and make-up that say more about the fashions that were around when the film was made, than the era they are meant to portray;
5. Plotlines that are either so predictable or so unbelieveable that they insult the intelligence;
6. A tacky theme song that induces homicidal thoughts every time you hear it.

That's right - you guessed.
The worst film ever is Titanic

All films made. You can guarantee somebody, somewhere will have overrated it at sometime or other.

You might as well ask what food it overrated, or what beer? Like arseholes, everyone's got an opinion, and it's largely meaningless to anyone else and the world in general.

I think both Hostel films are a classic example of all gore and no substance, i never rated Eli Roth as a particularly great director anyway when i got round to seeing Cabin Fever after all of its hyperbole, he seems to continuously make films that have lazy plotlines with bad stereotypical slasher movie fodder in them, its like he is making homages to the straight to Betamax video nasty movies of the 80s all the time, but with worse acting and much more leaden dialogue in them, its difficult to take any film of his seriously when you know Ruggero Deodato or Umberto Lenzi could probably make a more convincing job of it with only an oil drum full of Heinz tomato ketchup and a sack of butcher's offal to work with as their "special effects".

A complete hack of a film director is Eli Roth and someone who really does not deserve to be given such hype as "the saviour of modern horror" or whatever shit the critics foist and fawn over his name.

I dunno if he's the saviour of modern horror, but I have to say that I thought Hostel was brilliant. The second one was a big fish, though - total carp.

Make room under that cover please Boothy - I'm with you. 2001 is about the biggest pile of tripe ever commited to celluloid (mind you 2011 is worse) - and I am a big Sci Fi fan. I went to see it and expressed this opinion to a friend who is a big fan. His reply "you have to read the book to get it all" - no sorry I don't spend however much it was to see a film that neeRAB me to then go to W H Smith and buy the book.

Didn't mind Ghandi so much, mainly because I thought Ben Kingsley was superb - it did go on though.

Also agree with Titanic from other posters - had a moving effect on me - to the toilet to throw up.

Just thought of more!!

Apocolypse now - Rubbish and only rated so highly because of Marlon Brando.... what the hell is he going on about at the end!! Waffling pure doo doo. Platoon and Full Metal Jacket pee on it IMO.

Any film with Robin Williams in it!! (Apart from Bicentennial Man which I really liked.... where is that embarrassed face icon???)
