Moments in anime that REALLY freaked you out (and why)

-Pretty much all of Perfect Blue, but especially the climactic chase.
-AKIRA in general. I saw it when I was 12 and it made me look at animation WAY differently.
-Paprika. Much like AKIRA, this one would've freaked me out when I was younger, but it feels so energetic with imagination and enthusiasm watching it as an adult.

Higurashi has changed me for life. What a disturbing anime. *shivers*

This didn't freak me out as much as it made me shut my eyes a bit. It's in the beginning of Haibane Renmei when the wings sprout from of Rakka's back. I had this weird 'what in the hell...' look on my face the entire time.

There are some REALLY freakish scenes in the Tenjoh Tenge manga. Especially involving Shin. Mostly involving Shin....yeah. Throw a needle in there too.

Oh, I almost forgot one of the most disgusting anime series ever created: Apocalypse Zero. Think of the most disgusting, grossest things imaginable then mix it with Sailor Moon and Guyver. Seriously, this series is THE LINE for disgusting stuff that'll freak you out. If you can make it through this show, you can make it through anything.

Apocalipse Zero is just a Gore Fest. I have a hard time being shock by such stuff these days. Instead, its something shocking and unexpected that does it for me like Euphie.

How about that episode of Speed Grapher where Kagura walks in and sees her mother and her teacher doing not-in-front-of-the-children acts in her bedroom?

Never saw that in an anime before. Gutsy for a non-hentai series.

When I first saw the End of Evangelion (I was around thirteen, I think), the scenes haunted me for quite some time. But they were so spectacular that it kept me coming back.

Many of mine have already been mentioned, but I'll reiterate:
Tucker was just disturbing with everything he did. The Nina bit made me cry.
Ed's vulnerability is so haunting in that scene. It's really chilling to watch.
Agreed. That entire scene during the Forest of Death is disturbing, really. He's just so... ick.
Yeah, I think my jaw hit the floor and stayed there for about a week. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and didn't want to, either.

There final arc in Ghost Hunt where the house the group is staying in enRAB up being invaded by zorabies was creepy. Actually, a lot of the problems they deal with in that show had O_O qualities. The possessed doll and the "Blood-Soaked Labyrinth" especially come to mind.

Also, Light's confrontation with Near at the end of Death Note... Poetic justice and yet very disturbing to watch.

Kaori going squish in Akira. Mostly because it seemed like a pointless and unnecessary bit of extra violence that was thrown in solely for shock value, is a lousy counterpart to what happened to her in the comic, and is also completely inconsistent (given that the same thing happens to Kaneda, yet he survives).

Part 5 of Higurashi. You half-see it coming, but then the writers decide to take things to a level above and beyond even what you were imagining. The big reveal halfway through is one of the only moments of real horror I've ever felt while watching an anime; after that it's like watching a train wreck in slow motion, where you know it's not going to be pretty but keep watching because you're fascinated with seeing how ugly it gets.

There are also some doujinshi that have freaked me out pretty heavily, but I can't really go into detail on a family-friendly forum.

X/1999 (movie) - Kamui seeing his naked mother use her bare hand to pull a sword out of her gut.
Kinda made me think why the **** am I watching this?

Various moments in Evangelion.

Ah, this thread brings me back to the day when I would judge the merits of a series beased on how much sick and depraved material they could get away with, but I digress.

Usually if a "freaky" moment is staged well enough, no matter how tame it may be otherwise, I'll consider myself freaked out. Those two examples of Full Metal Alchemist mentioned earlier are good examples of this.

However, there are other series that just seem to try too hard, particularly in the gore category, that just doesn't have the effect it could otherwise. Elfen Lied comes to mind, in which I really couldn't help but to laugh at the screen whenever someone's decapitated head or lirab turned into Old Faithful.

Code Geass- Nina's face when
Euphie died. It's just this hideous, demented shape like a demon from hell... I guess CLAMP insisted on a psycho lesbian

Excel Saga- The scene in 'Going Too Far' where we get a clear view of the corpse-like Hyatt. Additionally, almost everything else in that episode made me feel dirty.

Gundam 00- When we find out Louise
survived the massacre of her family but lost a hand. It was so brutal and unfair. I couldn't believe it since anime tenRAB to be so soft on 'fanservice' characters but then this happened. Amazing guts from the staff but if only there was some way to retcon it I'd happily look the other way

Street Fighter II Movie: When Vega drops down from the ceiling to attack Chun-Li. The first time inspires a "GAH!" sort of reaction. You know it's coming, but you don't know when.

Captain Harlock - Endless Odyssey: This series is kind of weird because the enemy is this group of ancient aliens that are the erabodiment of fear. Several times they do their best to horrify Harlock in his crew into submission. For Harlock, he gets a fake vision of having his heart ripped out right before his eyes while they try to convince him his resistance is useless. This fails to affect Harlock, but the viewer isn't so lucky. Also, in one episode the friend of a crewmate is turned into a GROTESQUE monster and he has no choice but to kill it.

Solty Rei: This one made me yell at my screen.
Right after she reconciles with Roy, They crush Rose underneath a building! We see her BLOODIED HAND. Even though she's seen alive and healed later, it was a horrible shock at the time.

Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate: Anderson blows Alucard's head off and then laughs one of the most insane laughs ever. Very disturbing. It turns out that even years later, this show is too violent for me.

Paranoia Agent: The opening credits. All that disturbed laughing. WHAT THE HELL.

Full Metal Alchemist: Finding out about Tucker was an absolutely horrifying experience. Seriously, Full Metal Alchemist filled the quota for mad science in anime for at least the next ten years.

Gundam Seed: They killed Flay. THEY KILLED FLAY!

Gundam Seed Destiny: Junius 7. All along I thought, oh, there's no way they'll actually let this thing happen. The writers don't have the guts. And then they did it.

Too bad they didn't really do anything with it till the first episode of Stargazer. The Junius-7 drop was too easily glossed over and basically just an excuse to start the war again. When the thing is destroying the Vatican, you'd expect more of a reaction (though supposedly the space whale removed a great deal of support for the organised religions).

The thing with Junius 7 is that it was the worst-case scenario of other shows and here it actually happened in the first episodes. Its also just cruel when you consider what everyone went through to stop large-scale destruction in Gundam Seed.

Oh, another thing from Seed...human popcorn. Its not enough to have explosions, we see what's happening to the people inside...ick.

Hmmm... I don't think it's freaky.

Anyways, I don't think there's a WTF moment. That event you mentioned was creepy but not WTF.

I'm not gonna try and detract from the personal impact it had on you, but personally it felt like a cheap shock tactic to kick start the war. We never really saw the fall out of the colony drop, just a few brief shots of Gilbert sending aid. Compare that to 0083 where the Albion is flying over the ocean;

"When will we be at Australia?"
"We already are..."
"!"
"This area of ocean is right where the colony hit land"

For me, Destiny just kept going on about how terrible it was yet nothing happened. It's kinda like in DBGT where the characters keep insisting these are the strongest opponents ever faced but in fact they look weaker than the likes of Buu and Cell. I think Gundam X did the colony drop aspect so much better, since we open to a world where the majority of the population was wiped out, the climate has changed and humanity is struggling to get by. Just another example of Destiny doing something and not sticking to it.

Oh man, ever since that, things started gettng more out of hand.

Did they really have to kill off 3/4 of the RUC Personal!? They suddenly start dropping like flies in that one episode, it was ridiculous.

Paranoia Agent: As much as I love this anime. What. a. trip.

Speed Grapher: Mizunokuchi. That guy... *shivers*

Put me down for Higurashi. Every time something insane happened, my mind would go "But they looked so cute before...." >_>
