I thought last night's line up had promise ... it didn't. It just fell flat.
It got off to an awful start and by the time they dragged out Hugh's below par voiceover (which in itself is a sign that they don't have enough good material to fill half an hour) I gave up.
Totally agree. That's why i'm a fan of Mitchell and Byrne on the show. They don't need a script and can easily work into the flow of discussion. It's also why I think Dara O'Briain is one of the best standups around. Sure, he has got a routine for his gigs but the interaction with the audience and the improv that follows is excellent.
Dara's strength seems to lie in rescuing the floundering comedians. He often jumps in after a joke has died, and will save it by retelling it.
It seems like a difficult show to be a guest on - it's so competitive that unless you're someone like Milton Jones, with such a distinctive style, you just get lost in the pack.
One thing I have noticed - and I do quite like Russell Howard, but all his jokes seem to begin or end with some permutation of "How brilliant would it be if~" "~ - how fantastic would THAT be?"
Jack Whitehall's the indie looking fella. Looks like he's been dragged backward through a bush. He's actually about my age, so fair play to him - I'm still studying at uni, he's out appearing on panel shows! Living the dream! Horrendously jealous and he's clearly done something right. But I, personally, don't find him all that funny.
I thought the episode was ok. Addison and Jones did their bit. They weren't just sat there with blank faces for 30mins. Jones actually seemed to ad lib a bit more than he has in the past. Previously it was all seperate one liners from him.
Howard was getting a bit too close to overused his childish, crude material but the bit about Adebeyor was funny
They do need a guest with some real cynicism though. There are plenty of comedians out there who can give as good a Frankie Boyle used to.
Miles Jupp does "News Jack" on radio 7 - worth catching if you can - I find it consistantly funnier than radio 4's "Now show".
He was also in "Rev" as the curate
Oh god I cant stand Milton Jones, I don't think I have laughed once at one of his jokes. OK he may fit in the stand up rounRAB but telling one liner jokes during the panel part sort of stops any joke dead. He proved this last night when there was a whole conversation going on, he interrupted everyone with a poor one liner and stopped the conversation dead in its tracks.
I also noticed Russel Howard reused one of his stand up gags, which stood out like a sore thumb, Normally I love this show but last nights seemed quite poor in comparison to previous episodes.
Week 1: Show
Week 2: Show
Week 3: Show
Week 4: Unexplained hiatus
Week 5: Show
Week 6: Show
Week 7: Compilation
Followed by a six week hiatus.
The scheduling's fairly... erratic. Actually, I'd say abominable. Keeping in mind that there's only two weeks' worth of time between Ep 1 and Ep 3, that's awful.
No idea how much longer this'll last. Wonder how the ratings and AI are looking.
