Don't go through a company. They can't do anything you can't do yourself and they charge a load of money.
The firm that arranged the PPI should have explained what if was and how it worked. It should also have been appropriate for your boyfriend at the time. If it is clear that your boyfriend could not possibly have claimed (e.g. he was self-employed) or the PPI was added without explanation, he has grounds for complaint. He should write to the firm heading his letter COMPLAINT, explaining why he thinks the PPI was missold and asking for his money back.
The firm need to investigate the complaint and should keep your boyfriend informed of progress. If they don't investigate, or he doesn't agree with their decision, he can then ask the Financial Ombudsman to intervene. Apart from the cost of the stamps, none of this costs you a penny.
