Minority opinions you have about animation

Agreed on EEE and importing animation from other countries, not so much on the dub bashing. As I have said before on other threads, I actually prefer dubs in most cases for two reasons: 1. Personally, I am better qualified to judge a voice performance in English because my ear for Japanese speech (not singing; I've long found that great songs don't have to have comprehensible lyrics) is really bad. 2. Reading the subtitles is a huge pain. I like and enjoy live-action foreign films; with those, it's easier to concentrate on both the action and the subtitles. In animation, however, I have found that it's hard to concentrate on both the onscreen movements and subtitles. I have no explanation for this; maybe it's just me.

Anyway, carry on! Oh, and I agree with the poster (I think it was Beat) who said that "reconstructionist" giant robot shows such as Gaogaigar or Gurren Lagann are way more fun than Evangelion and it's numerous knockoffs.

Even if you like season 2 better than the rest, I don't think it's possible to argue that it had any remotely deep or dramatic episodes; every attempt at actual drama came after season 2.

What are your opinions on animation in general that are considered to be a minority opinion?
-Disney cartoons of the 50's were regulary better then the Disney shorts of the 30's and 40's.
-Walter Lantz's cartoons on the whole are vastly underrated, and pretty much outshined anybody else besides the "Main 3"(that being WB, MGM, Disney).
-The Disney feature "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" is grossly overrated. I can name a dozen Disney features I'd place before it. Its tremendously important to animation history, though.
-I never cared for anime at all. I think it's only animation in the broadest sense (where's the secondary actions? The squash and stretch?) I just don't see what's so 'beautiful' or 'wonderful' about any of it.
-Famous Studios cartoons(known as Harveytoons today) could be great. They had some great characters (Herman & Katnip, Baby Huey, Buzzy Crow, Wolfie) and some very talented animators (Marty Taras being my favorite).
-Rocko's Modern Life is a hugely underrated show, and certainly deserves more exsposure.

Eva was never meant to be "fun".

If dubbed faithfully, English versions of anime are ALWAYS, without exception, better than the Japanese versions for an primarily English speaking audience.

Anyone who makes blanket generalizations about anime, such as "Anime is overrated", "Anime doesn't have good animation", or "Anime is just perverted and weird", is just as stupid as anyone who says something like "Anime is just better than American cartoons".

The Simpsons and South Park are both just as good, if not better, than they were in the seasons that most people consider their "golden years". Maybe this isn't true in a vacuum, but the reason I say "better" is because the cultural context that the shows exist in today make it infinitely more difficult to write an episode today than it was in the first 4 or 5 years of the shows' existence. The fact that they still do, and still make them funnier than the overwhelming majority of stuff on TV today, means that they are doing a spectacular job. For a good counter-example, see Family Guy. It's the perfect example of a show that has been unable to adapt to its own success and the world around it that it helped to create. Robot Chicken is another good example, but on a much smaller scale.

My minority opinions:

-The action shows on Toonami during the late-90s-early '00s are boring.

-Space Jam is a good movie.

-I don't like Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (the show is too dated and campy).

-I hate Naruto.

-Cartoon Network is not awful, merely hit-and-miss.

I never said it was a drama, but it was a good mix of both. Sure After S2 were some good episodes, but Season 1 & 2 are much better.

Futurama is way overrated, specially the finale

Why are you referring to anime as if it's all made by one person or one studio? You do realize that there's good and bad stuff that comes from Japan, just like the US? How much have you actually seen?

The budgets are also much lower. Even anime movies cost about 1/4 of American productions.

Maybe it's not a good excuse, but because of budget constraints they've worked out a different formula there to do animation. They focus a lot on framing, composition, and pictorial beauty of single images, whereas Western formula for animation is a lot more focused on movement and motion.

It's kind of like asking, "Why does Ozu keep his camera at sitting level? Why does he never move the camera around like other live action directors?" It's a formula he's worked out that works for how he tells his story. (Although it had nothing to do with budget in Ozu's case).

- Evangelion is watchable but there's no reason for it to get the praise it does. It's all just teenagers with trust issues dealing with pusedo-religious bull crap

- Likewise, I don't consider Akira to be amazing just strange.

- Naruto is overrated, but Bleach is even more overrated. A this point it's pretty much got nothing going for it.

- American Dad is as funny or funnier than Family Guy and does not deserve the hate it gets.

- South Park has never been funny and it never will be the same goes for animated Boondocks.

- Spongebob should have fallen off years ago.

- Japanese and American studios have both run out of good ideas.

- Only the first 5 episode pilot of 1987 TMNT was really good. The rest of the series is somewhat entertaining but it really doesn't hold up at all.

- Dragonball Z is more entertaining that Dragonball. Even at it's most actiony points Dragonball is a bit dull.

- 4kids dubs of Shaman King and Mew Mew were quite enjoyable.

Minority opinions?

First off, I can't stand anime. I've tried watching a diverse assortment of anime. I really have. But I just can't get into it no matter how hard I try. I think for the most part it's incredibly overrated. But of course that's just my opinion.

Secondly, I also think Gargoyles is overrated, as well as Invader Zim. I don't get the appeal of either show. Again, I've tried to watch both - and I used to think Gargoyles was pretty cool when it was new - but it just never clicked for me.

"Family Guy" is not funny. "American Dad" is not funny. Seth McFarlane should stay away from animation altogether.

Shows with a sucky first season sometimes improve greatly by the second season. ("Spongebob", "Billy and Mandy", "Kappa Mikey" "Loonatics" apparently.)

Unfortunately, the opposite also remains true. ("Sheep in the Big City", "Brandy and Mr Whiskers", "Viva Pinata", )

- I only like 30% of the anime I've ever seen...and I try to watch a lot of it to give it a chance...70% of it is overrated.

- South park has little or no entertainment value.

- Cartoon Network, Nicktoons and Toon Disney have gone way down in quality.

- I didn't like Boondocks very much.

- Goku:Midnight Eye kicked butt...but nobody's heard of it but me (it seems).

Agreed. I like some Japanese animation, Studio Ghibli's work is wonderful.
However, even in a lot of Miyazaki's films, the animation is still limited because the budgets are low.

However, the animation is still very good and is leagues ahead of any of the anime that is regarded as "good" by anime fans (Naruto, One Peice, Inuyasha, Death Note, DBZ etc.) in both the storytelling and artistic aspects.

The only thing I've ever seen from Japan that was fully animated was Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis.

Here here!
