Migrate from a Sony Ericsson to a Nokia E62 without Cingular's help?

Hello.

My first post here, please be patient with me.

I'd like to change phones from a Sony Ericsson Z525A to a Nokia E 62, and thanks to Cingular's draconian policies, it looks as though I'll have to do it without their assistance. (I need to wait another 6 months according to Cingular before I'm eligible to change out my phone, otherwise they'll charge me $450 for the Nokia E 62, even when Nokia itself sells the phone for $309 retail/no plan ).

I was considering going through Nokiausa.com or ebay for the phone, when a friend pointed out that unless I had the appropriate Cingular settings and plan, I probably wouldn't be able to use the advanced features of the Nokia anyway. And Cingular definitely won't help me configure a phone I didn't purchase directly from them.

Currently I have the MEDIA BASIC BUNDLE, and text message and surf the web (painfully) with my Samsung, but I don't want to assume this will work automatically if I put my SIM card into another phone.

Does anyone have suggestions? information? guidance? I'd hate to spend $310+ on a phone only to find all I can do is make and receive calls.

just pop your sim in and your ready to go. you should add the media max plan, as you will go thru your other plan pretty quick

Well that's promising news. Any idea if Cingular will add on fees or "auto" extend my contract if I decide to upgrade from Media Basic to Media Max?

You can change it on line yourself. Just go into your account or set one up at cingular.com. You can add delete at will. I have the unlimited data plan on mine as I dont want any surprises oh and I bought mine from ebay, popped in my sim changed my plan and away I went....

In fact I would suggest hopping on Ebay or checking through your employer to see if you get any discounts. i was able to get mine for 50% off retail with my employer discount.

First thing I would do when you get it, UNBRAND THE THING. http://symbianguru.typepad.com/welcome/2006/12/finally_a_java_.html There's the walkthrough. When you unbrand it, and then turn it on with your Cingular SIM card in there, it'll automatically read your Internet/SMS/MMS settings from your card. Just turn it on and go!

Enjoy.

Thanks everyone for the info!

The Nokia flagship store is near my office, and my guess is that they would sell unbranded/unlocked phones since the buyer would not necessarily be a Cingular customer. (I tried calling to ask, but no one picked up the phone. ) I'll try to stop by after work today to find out.

The Nokia flagship stores (either Chicago or New York) do not sell unlocked/unbranded E62s or even E61s. If you pop in there, you might as well take a look at the E70-2 or some of their other devices to fit your needs. I'd even grab an E61 online if I were you, since the E62 lacks some of the E61's more useful functions (wifi, java, etc)

The bottom line is that you're NEVER limited to the phones provided by your GSM carrier.

You're right, they don't carry E62s (Cingular has the exclusive) or the E61s (no idea why they don't) but they told me where I could find the E61 locally, and once I buy it, I'm welcome to come back to the store and they'll help me get set-up.

I won't be visiting J&R since they want $480 for the E61 (without service plan).

The Cell Hut has it for $399, but it's still somewhat pricey. It'd be cheaper to buy the E62 ($309) and have it unlocked ($25).

Maybe I'll hold out for President's Day sales.

If wifi's important to you, it's worth the extra money for an E61.

This seller on eBay is very reputable and you won't go wrong.

These guy's are also really good.

You also probably won't need Nokia's help with setting up your phone. Everything you'd want to do to configure it for use on Cingular can be done easily yourself. I'm sure people here would be more than happy to help you also (at least, I would). When you pop your SIM card into the phone, it will automatically add Cingular's access points to your phone and you should be ready to go. That's it. There's tutorials inside the phone itself for finding wifi spots, setting up email, and almost anything else you'd want to use. With s60, you really can't go wrong.

The E62 or E61 are both pretty nice phones - i'd think about how abundant wifi is around you. Pretty much, the only thing that seperates a E62 from a E61 is WiFi - if you don't have availiable wifi, then they basically function the same. They both excel at web browsing and reading email due to the large screen.
