:) Hello
I had a Microdiscectomy on L4 august 31, 2006. Before having the surgery I suffered 4 months going to chiropractor, physical therapist. My husband was told by the doctor that performed the Microdiscectomy that my nerve was so hot. I had no idea that after having the surgery that I would still be in so much leg/lower back pain. It has been a long recovery for me because I was/am unable to take the Neurontin to help calm the damage nerve down.
On several post-op visit the surgeon notice that I wasn't recovering like he thought I should....he suggested placing a nerve stimulator in my back. I told him I didn't want. He then seem a little short with me and told me to try physical therapy, water therapy, or just endure the suffering for about three years. Since my last post- op visit I have tried (again) the physical therapist, the water therapy, desensitining along with the DRX9000. None of that help. I am exhausted from having a constant backache everyday, and my left leg is still sensitive/nurab to touch. I don't want this thing place in my back, but i am so exhausted until i don't know whatelse to do....oh yeah I tried walking to recondition my leg. My left leg is so weak after not being able to use it for so long. Sitting for a long period of time is my worse enemy
( I am a secretary). I am reaching out for help through the here.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME

P.S
I am so sorry this was so long.

I too sit alot, and that bothers me, so I stand, and stretch as much as possible and it does help... At lunch time, I try to walk around the building a few times which also helps.

You need to keep those muscles strong as possible..

Tuttie, I'm curious if you had a discogram before your surgery and what that showed. Was the L4 for certain the only problem area? What did the doctor mean by you having a "hot nerve"?

Tuttie.. have you tried getting a 2nd or 3rd opinion?

It took me 4 surgeons over 3 years that would do more testing to find out what might be causing my pain. Luckily.. he found the source of my pain and I am now fused at l4/l5 and that nagging 3 years of horrific pain is gone!

I let a doctor control my care for over 2+ years. She didnt do much at all, but medicate me, do a few MRI's and then tell me to live with my pain. She never tried to see if something else was causing my pain at all. I left there and started searching for the right doctor to help me. Took awhile, but I found the right doc.

You dont want the stimulator.. so before you commit to something you don't want.. you should at least have a few other doctors check you out, your history and see if they can offer you some other ideas/solutions/discovery to better help you.

Take care. Tammy:wave:

Thanks Tammy
But I am exhausted from going from A PT, CHP, DRX9000, AND pain pills.
This was my 2nd opinion. Where I live I am afraid of the opinions...for the most part the doctors don't seem to care here.

thanks anyway

OnHold -- when my doc opened me up...he sad my nerve was hot -- red hot. So I am assuming that this what they mean't.

Having herniated L3/L4, and then L4/5, with 2 microdiscetomies, and now having reherniated L4/5, I get a lot of mileage out of deep tissue massage therapy. My ESI 2 weeks ago has helped quite a bit, too.

Tutti51,

I'm so sorry to hear about the trouble you've had. I've just joined this site because of similar issues. I originally hurt my back about 12 years ago but it has progressively gotten worse the last few years. Finally in Sept '04, I officially herniated L4-5 and ruptured L5-S1. Add that to a major car accident later in March '05 and I was in trouble. I did all the Physical Therapy, epidural steroid shots, etc. but nothing worked. I just had my microdiscectomy on L5-S1 on January 30, '07. It's been 5 weeks and my pain has gotten worse instead of better. The doctor has already scheduled another MRI to see if the disc has re-herniated, something that only happens in about 4% of cases but sounRAB like it might be worth checking out for your situation. I realize I'm writing in a couple months AFTER your original post so hopefully your issue has been resolved by now, but if not... Research it and maybe ask for a an MRI. After all, it can't hurt.
