Mickey Rourke Was Robbed!

The arguements here are ridiculous.

I watched both pictures, one I thoroughly enjoyed the other I found a bit of a chore. It wasn't a bad film it was just repetitive, given the nature of the historic story it was conveying, nothing could be done about that.

Both films were powerful and emotive in their own way, and featured some stunning performances from leaRAB and supporting cast.
I personally preferred O Rourkes performance, not to say that Penns wasn't great. There's not that much between then, (I also thought Jenkins was wonderful in a very subtle role in the Visitor, and while never a true contender, was delighted to see him acknowledged).

If you're not happy with the decision fine, but to completely character assasinate the oppostion is ridiculous, people need to get some perspective. All the implied homophobe remarks I find distasteful and I question their validity.

True, but when people debate things, they often try to expand upon their opinion a little.

It'd be boring if we just agreed to disagree straight away.

Besides without the debate, how else would I have been able to educate you a little on the craft of acting.

As for my reference to Jack Nickleson, I was alluding to the concept of star power, and method acting vs character acting. Rourke is more method, and Penn more character.

It was a tangental point, I grant you, but I thought you'd understand its significance.

I've always much preffered method men.

Yeah hes a well known homophobe so he really did, someone who can put their nasty ignorant feelings aside for a film deserves to have an oscar right?

Award after award the Oscars was one big joke last night and in one night has become the laughing stock of Hollywood. They really did turn a corner and now more than ever its apparant these awarRAB shows mean very little. Public have known this for years, just last night it became more evident than ever.

Even today showing the little children and their parents celebrating in Mumbai everytime Slumdog Millionaire won an award........meh.Let them have their fun. Few weeks itll take, things will go back to normal....

well, if he had won, sure as eggs is eggs, we'd have seen this thread :

"How on earth did the mighty Sean Penn not win the award for best actor it was a complete joke he did not win his portral of Harvey Milk it was done outstandly that outshone everyone else..."

i think it was a strong year, and could have gone to any of Rourke, Penn or Langella.

where does this come from?

i've read it before, but i find it hard to believe that Penn, who does a lot of human rights campaigning, would have taken this part if he really was a raging homophobe.

It was a dire film popularised by the recent Proposition 8 change in California and how people have used this film and this film was made to highlight that.

It's a controversial film for that nature and Sean Penn is loved all over Hollywood - when he beat Billy Murray's deserved oscar for Lost in Translation there was uproar as well and this time he got a headline grabbing for playing Milk in a rubbish film but because of Proposition 8 it got the headlines at this show.

Pathetic result. Rourke wasn't the only one better than Penn - Jenkins, Langella and Pitt were too.

If you really think that's all Sean Penn did then I guess you haven't seen the film or didn't really watch it properly.

On the other hand, as far as I can tell, Rourke played Rourke and nothing else. He did it very well but doesn't necessarily mean it's worthy of awarRAB.

I saw the Wrestler and I could not believe any of the plaudits that Rourke had received, none of the awarRAB made any sense to me, he played himself in that film, there was no acting involved. I'm astonished he was ever the favourite to win anything let alone an Oscar.

To be honest, as much as I loved Milk and thought that Penn was incredible in it, I would have preferred Langella to take the statuette because he was magnificent as Nixon. I can't comment on Jenkins as haven't seen that film but Pitt was (as ever) dire.

Not entirely sure you know anything about acting, certainly not enough to 'educate' anyone else, you certainly seem to have a handle on being patronising though. And I'm afraid I'm with Laurence Olivier on method 'actors.'

And since we're going for patronising, it's Jack NICHOLSON. Simply throwing his name into the 'debate' added nothing, there was no significance because it wasn't relevant.

Mickey Rourke could have been a great actor but he screwed up his life and his career. The fact that he held it together long enough to produce a half decent performance in a mediocre film is all well and good but imho he didn't even put in the best performance in that film let alone of last year.

Haven't seen either film but I do know Sean Penn does every role he takes justice so wouldn't be surprised if he was the more deserving.

I for one was pleased with this result as he's a consummate actor. Meh!

Oh dear, all the bitterness is just pouring out of people about this result.

"Penn only won because they didn't give it to the gays for Brokeback! Booo!"

What a bunch of drama queens. Sean Penn was totally deserving of this award. It was a powerful performance that was technically stunning and a total transformation. Mickey Rourke's was gut-wrenching in its raw power, but a lot of the time he seemed as if he was just playing his usual, crudely-charming self.

Like I said - either one deserved it. It's sad to see so many people writing off as great an actor as Sean Penn because of imaginary "Oscar politics".

I dont like either Penn or Rourke but I would rather have seen it go to Rourke....just cos his chihuahua died.

And the fact that I hate Penn - he is so obviously desperate for an Oscar win - which can be seen from his recent movies - his desperate need to be in a film he thinks has the 'worthiness' to win an Oscar ie boring drama, biopic, american 50's/60's/70's drama or my own personal favourite of his.....mentally disabled/unhinged person......

I mean, come ON! He is so transparent! He probably got down on his knees at some point and wailed to an open sky in downtown LA......'PLEASE, ACADEMY, ACKNOWLEDGE ME, I AM BRILLIANT, I AM WORTHY, I AM PENN......!'

D1ck......
