Mi: 3

Sorry if there is already a thread on this...

Have posted a number of times about how terrible blockbusters have been in the last few years and now dammit I've got my hopes up all over again. Ain't-it-cool-news have reviewed MI:3 and declared it not just the best of the series, but the best spy action movie of all time.

AAAARRRGH! I can't help myself! I so want to watch a good blockbuster again but I am disappointed every time! Has JJ Abrams really done it and made a proper film out of a franchise?!

It's out here in a couple of weeks... am trying to keep my expectations realisticly to "oh well, at least Simon Pegg is in it".

I am really loooking forward to MI3 as I loved the first film but was dissappointed by the second one. After reading that review I have also got my hopes up for MI3 especially with JJ Abrams directing and it is only 2 weeks untill it is released!

I agree with you all - MI 1 was good fun, but number 2 was abysmal. That's 2 hours of my life I'm never getting back, and I still resent it...

I'm not convinced that MI: 3 will be any good. Mission Impossibe is really all about intrigue with a bit of action at key points.

Isn't that kinda what the review said though? I think True Lies, like pretty much all of Cameron's stuff, focuses way more on character and story than action. The action is memorable, sure, but part of the reason it works is cos you are into the story.

Can't help myself, still hoping...

OMG! This is what I was thinking :D

Has anyone noticed that Tom Cruise has to run in anything he's in - 'Minority Report', 'War Of The WorlRAB', 'Mission Impossible', etc - is it contractual?

Hopefully it should be good cannot wait myself. With JJ Abrams onboard after doing Felicity, Alias and now Lost they could not have chosen a better Director at this moment in time.

Here's an odd thing - it's kinda flopped in the States (don't know about the rest of the world). Yeah, I know - it's a funny old world when $48m in a first weekend makes for a flop, but there we are.

General reviews and reactions (including here) have been good. So theories abound as to why it has done relatively badly - people are sick of Cruise and his madness, a bad weekend to open etc.

Personally I think MI2 killed MI3. I loathed MI2, and really only saw three cos I knew JJ Abrams was behind it. Once you've seen a bad film in a series, it takes a lot to want to go back. I've still never seen Matrix Revolutions, for example. But in this case I actually feel sorry for the MI3 crowd.

Now here's a theory. I think MI3 is one of the best blockbusters of this decade so far, but it is coming at a time when the public are so sick of dire Hollywood films that it may be too late. For this generation, has the cinema finally lost its sheen? Has Hollywood killed itself?

Or maybe I'm over-reacting a tad...

i saw it yesterday and was impressed -

First half of the film very good -
going into vatican was excellent
the rubber mask scene was very cleverly executed

now one scene that did disappoint was the
hanging Phillip Seymour Hofmann out of the plane. with all special effects going on it was very tame

then second half of film seemed to whizz by without much plot enhancement and although there was quite a bit of action, and you kinda got carried along with the flow, and before you knew it the end came and went rather quickly. a bit of a damp squib in fact. (dont get me wrong it is a good action flick, best of MI series and i would recommend it, but not wow all way through) and
the ending was cheesy and contrived - nurse and a good shot - wow!

i did like use of MI series style incidental music though.

and PSH did act TC off the screen.

so all in i think empire got it right - out of 5 -(2 1/2 stars each half)...
2 and a half for first half
1 and a half for the second
but 1 star deducted for the last spoiler (see above)
3 stars in total - easy peasy!

so set your brain on bubble gum mode, go see it for yourself and you wont be disappointed... :D

I hear what you're saying but I think people use the world 'flop' too quickly these days. Didn't Kong and Narnia have similar openings last year? In this case it has performed under the expectations of what the studio thought it would pull in. That's just the US box office. Internationally it did buisness more in line with what was predicted.

Just been to see this, and despite the poor reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Firstly, what is most striking is Ethan Hunt's wife remarkable resemblance to Katie Holmes kinda crossed with Victoria Beckham. - QUOTE]

She reminded me a lot of Kimberley Williams who was in the Father of the Bride films and the 10th Kingdom.
