Mi: 3

No I wont be as I am off to my brothers for a meal so I am going tomorrow to watch MI3. I just hope in the UK we also get the new Superman Returns trailer shown before it as that will really make it seem like the start of summer blockbuster season!

Should be an excellent movie with JJ onboard but the gushing 'everybody on this movie was just awesome!' making of doc on ITV recently was painful to watch.
Still, bring it on!

I saw it tonight, and it was...

Great!

Very reminiscent of True Lies on several counts, but no bad thing. Good balance between action / story, well paced, Simon Pegg is fantastic.... blimey, a good blockbuster, just like Gran used to make. Never thought I'd see the day again...

Empire's three star review was way off. I think they are losing the plot meself.

The whole box office thing has become a complex science, and it's hard to compare like with like. It does get pretty boring, but if you want to follow the story for the full reasons as to the difference between MI3, Narnia and Kong I suggest you try www.boxofficemojo.com.

It's mainly about number of screens and timing - Narnia and Kong opened just before holiday seasons, while MI3 is now expected to plummet in the blockbuster-intesive next few weeks. Kong, of course, did have disappointing box office as well (not a bomb, but disappointing none the less), only Narnia I think was considered a success.

All that said, point taken about international revenues, which were good. I think box office megastars like cruise live longer abroad, and I guess there has been less saturation media about dear old Tom's antics which might bore people.

I think globally MI3 will make its money back, but this was supposed to be a sure thing cash cow... a well reviewed film from a huge franchise. I still sense ructions in Hollywood....

Wooooooooaaaaaahhhhhh amazing

You could definitely see JJ's contribution to it (some scenes reminiscent of Alias, and the music reminiscent of both Alias and Lost, oh, and Greg Grunberg :D)

I couldn't see the connections to lost (JJ said there would be some) during the film, but:

The Hanso Corporation was apparently credited in the credits

Did anyone notice the subliminal group of 4 dots in the middle of the screen a few times during the bridge scene?

I don't think it'll be a flop, but it won't be as successful as they would like it to be. I certainly think his poor PR since he got together with Katie Holmes has no doubt contributed to the poorer audiences Stateside.

I'm going to see it today; I just hope it's back to the roots of the first film and TV show.

The second one is god awful, and seeing parts of it yesterday on ITV2 only reminded me of that.

John Woo single handily destroyed everything that made the TV show and first film (which followed its source material quite nicely) so great with MI: II. Tom Cruise may be a crazy chap, but he certainly wasn't crazy enough to convince himself to work with John Woo again (BRAVO Tom!).

box office takings shouldn't be brought into the 'failure/pass' factor - prices go up, automatically making films look like they've earned more. surely they should simply do a viewing figure, rather that takings?

the simple fact is that people go and see less films at the cinema now - adding up the costs involved, buying the dvd and getting a few frienRAB round is more practical and, in a lot of ways, more suitable for many.

Well, I've seen it! and guess what?.... I LOVED the film!! (8/10)

"It buried MI:II within the first 30 minutes alone"... The sooner that horrible sequel is forgotten, the better. Even Cruise has publicly said on record that the filming of the first sequel was just one major disaster after the next and he honestly felt the final film was nowhere near as good as he initially thought it would be and was hugely disappointed (I agree with you for once Tom!) MI:II was a complete joke and whatever you may think of him, Tom certainly wasn't careless enough to ever let John Woo touch MI:III. Just watch the biography channel interview they did with him last year. :D

I too managed to see the film on Thursday (despite a lazy projectionist's 'aspect ratio' problem for the first 10 minutes of the film) and I have to say that I almost whole-heartedly agree with the Empire review:

As general action flicks go it certainly touches all the bases, but it's just a shame it didn't excel beyond the all-too-obvious cliches and special effect bombshells. A fine piece of Saturday night entertainment, but ultimately nothing special.

In some ways I kind of feel that the 'Mission Impossbile' franchise is doomed by a lack of a coherent style - De Palma went spy-thriller, Woo tried action/adventure, whilst Abrams has tried a mix of the two with a dose of Scott's patented "Black Hawk" shakey-cam and Cameron's epic action sequences :D It amazes me that no one has tried to achieve that tense psychological edge that the TV series went for - but then again, I suppose this is 'Hollywood' we're talking about...:D

I went to see it this afternoon, it was so much better than the 2nd one, in storyline, action, pace, and choice of actors. I still think the first one outdoes both of them (maybe because we didnt know what to expect, maybe because the direction and story were better)

Simon Pegg is great as are Laurence Fishburne, Billy Crudup and Philip Seymour Hoffman - but they're also seriously underused.

he was very average

sorry but i actually think TC is great and he came across really well on russell brand's show the other week.

i never belive half of what the tabs print

I wonder, combined with piracy, if this means that we really will see less blockbusters? I'm beginning to think that Lucas is right, and the era of the cinema is coming to an end...

Just been to see this, and despite the poor reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Firstly, what is most striking is Ethan Hunt's wife remarkable resemblance to Katie Holmes kinda crossed with Victoria Beckham. Needless to say, Philip Seymour Hoffman acts Tom Cruise off the film, he hardly breaks into a sweat (although his character is a bit sweaty). As usual there are several product placements in the film: Mercedez Benz, Kodak, Oakley Sunglasses and Cillit Bang - which is used to jailbreak Hoffman by corroding the side of a prison van ;) The stunts are incredible - with a particularly spectacular one involving Tom Cruise sliding down the side of a glass sky-scraper roof in Shanghai. In the movie we spotted subliminal noRAB to previous Cruise films including:

- Cocktail
- Jerry Maguire
- Born On The Fourth Of July
- Minority Report
- Interview With A Vampire

Did anyone spot any others?
(I wonder if there were any similar subliminal messages about Scientology!!)

Just seen MI3 and really enjoyed it.
Did anyone else here think that some of the scenes were slightly distorted (like watching a widescreen pic on a normal telly) so that Tom looked thinner and hence taller than he really is? Or was it just my vision playing up?

It's basically Alias with Tom Cruise in it as expected but I quite enjoyed it - easily the best of the three.
I did think Michelle Monahagan's part was a little underwritten though and her job was rather convenient for the plot.
Nonetheless, it's the next best thing to a 'proper' Alias flick (which will probably never happen :( )
