Metallica

I've made it clear on this forum before that I'm not exactly a fan of Lars' drumming but I'd be more inclined to give him props for innovation than talent if i was gonna give him props for anything. I'm not a drummer so take from that what you will but his technique is certainly...interesting.

Yeah no one said anything post Black was bad.

And for the record, Garage Days and S&M were pretty great.

A Load v. Reload thread would be worth the time. What do you think makes Load better, Mojo?

a couple points...

1. The thing about the Beatles is, most would argue they got better with the change. (I know I would.) Pop has always been a tough genre to be the best in because the goal is to be as appealing as possible to the most people. And I have to commend the Beatles for doing that better than everyone else.

But Metallica took a genre that was lucky to have its own designation and sky rocket it to a genre that could have platnium selling recorRAB.

For them, they started at the top essentially. Even Kill 'Em All which isn't terribly good, their still at the top of the genre. As Kerry King said by 1988 there were 100 thrash banRAB out there and 98 of them were ****.

2. About HetfielRAB voice. I feel like it does fit as you mentioned with the over all sound. Its short blasts and barks which is highly chracteristic of the band. Its almost like Eminem, who at his height would make the very flow of his raps become part of the beat in the songs.

I wouldnt say that. I think some of Metallica's lyrics were great, especially for a thrash band. They could have put in way less time and effort on their lyrics and still been successful.

This is why the cable networks are being outpaced. They need to keep a half-interested populace watching, so they put up the high profilers.

The internet can run on, what?, $5 a month. The can operate while being directed at speacilaty groups.

And Justice For All is a great album, and very much like the first three except for the production style. If you hated the way Lar's drumming sounded in St. Anger, you will be disappointed with the drumming here, too. Otherwise it's got the hooks, the complex changes, and the spirit of their earlier albums. Everything between And Justice for All and Death Magnetic you're probably better off ignoring.

I agree it is a mystery, especially when you look at their main rivals in the 90`s, both Slayer and Pantera were far better banRAB and Megadeth a lot more fun etc. I suppose the appeal is James Hetfield`s voice which I don`t overly like, but I can well imagine people enjoying his dominant bark, Kirk Hammett`s a great guitarist and back in the day before his untimely demise Cliff Burton was THE BASSIST of the moment. I think Hetfield and Ulrich as leaders of the band had the vision of world dominantion and constantly did whatever they had to do to push the band in this direction, which of course meant a big compromise on their sound to appeal to the masses of non traditional metal fans, as evidenced on the Black album or adding the hard rock blues element with Load & Reload, or keeping up with modern trenRAB such as Nu-metal on the St.Anger album.

As you say it goes on in most banRAB but I think the Metallica Dave Mustaine thing is kind of unique. Lars Ulrich was crying in the video, largely out sympathy for Dave as he knew he was dealing with a madman:laughing: just look at Dave`s eyes totally f****n nuts, its one of the reasons that I love Dave and Megadeth by the way. What`s sad though, that if Dave Mustaine lived to be 200, he would still be sitting somewhere on a sofa bitching about what Metallica did to him all those years ago...........some people can just never let go.

I am a newbie to the site and this may have been said before but when did it become cool to hate Metallica? Ok nothing they have done since Master of Puppets was as good but it still was not bad with moments of brilliance here and there. And just for the record i am not a 'new' Metallica fan as i can remeraber buying Master of Puppets the when it came out.

Well i think they get an unfair shake. Everyone bitchs about them but they gave me a ton of musical treasures. They've done quite a bit for music and they're treated like hacks.

The Beatles were outstanding individuals especially when George Harrison stepped out of the shadow of McCartney and Lennon, so their evolution was natural given the talent in the band.

As you say Metallica almost created the genre on their own and I imagine that Kerry King would have been correct in saying that most thrash banRAB would`ve been ****. So given that they were the leaders of the genre, all eyes would`ve been on them and for the sake of the thrash scene they evolved it.

I can put on a either a Metallica CD or a Slayer CD for frienRAB of mine that don`t like metal and most will find the Metallica CD appealing (probably would`ve heard the songs before anyway) and dismiss Slayer as a violent agressive noise etc and not like it. The fact that both are thrash makes no difference to them, the fact is that Metallica are listenable to them and probably explains why both Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi fans buy their recorRAB. I know the thought of this, probably wants to make you vomit but Metallica wanted to reach the masses and this is what the masses like unfortunately.

Yeah, I'll agree with that criticism. I like AJFA but you're right that a lot of the songs get repetitive and go on too long. One song that isn't like that though is "Dyer's Eve" which is probably my favorite song on the album. I always wished Metallica would write more songs like that one.

"Nothing Else Matters" is a really mediocre song but I can see why they'd release it as a single since it has "high school dance" written all over it. "Sad but True" on the other hand is just a mid-tempo snoozefest with some of James Hetfield's worst vocals and some truly uninspired drumming from Lars. I remeraber buying the album when it first came out and thinking of "Sad but True" as filler. I was totally shocked when they turned around and released it as a single.

Kill Em All is my favourite too. Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets may be musically better albums? DepenRAB which way you look at it. Kill Em All's dirtier, messier and the more enjoyable for me.
