Metallica

in that case you're probably looking for the black album, load wasn't an attempt at making something 'a bit' different. it was their attempt at retaining the popularity they enjoyed with the 'slight' changes that were made with the black album in a post-grunge market.

basically, the black album is metallica trying something a bit different than their old stuff.

load/re-load is metallica trying to be the heaviest alt-rock band of the mid 90s. a time when worthwhile alt-rock was already dead and paving a way for crap like creed and its ilk.

That is absolutely fucking brilliant. It's a virtual note for note recreation but it still has it's own identity. I was worried to how they would manage the breakdown and subsequent guitar harmonies but that was glorious. I need to get this for sure.

People don't like them because they went crap after the Black Album (many would argue that the Black album was the first crap album), then started hitting back at their fans for doing EXACTLY what they did when they started out - ie, sharing music.

In those days, we all swapped tapes. Now we download mp3s. No difference except scale.

The banRAB Metallica had tapes of never made it. Why? Because no-one bought their bloddy stuff!!!

Metallica had already sold gazillions when they went after sharers - they didn't need to.

That makes them hypocrites, as well as purveyors of poopy music.

That's why no-one likes them!

Alright, Death Magnetic is pretty good, and they did charge 1980s prices for their recent gig at the O2.

What were they doing differently with Load though? They evolved their sound more with ...Justice For All and then definitely with the Black Album. Load for me just continues on where the Black Album left off but the difference being there are no real stand out tracks on Load, no significant alternation in sound from the previous record, no potentially massive commercial hits the size of Nothing Else Matters and Sandman and then you're just left with something that will shift a few units, make the band a little more money and then fade away into insignifance.

Don't get me wrong, I LIKE Load, it's a fairly accessible, enjoyable record that does nothing to really get any kind of a negative reaction from me like St. Anger would do a few years down the line but it's just...average.

Just the same, U2 and Metallica's cataloge is about 9 times better than most other banRAB.

The problem with the sell out thing is that they played metal. And like punk, its a race toward the bottom with who can do the most without appearing to distance themselves from the anti-social clown who can't wash his hair or talk to girls.

Thats who determines the "sell out" line. If you clung to metallica like a newborn suckeling from the teet because they made you feel good, and then they cut your hair and you disowned them like an Italian-american who came home preggers one day, well thats the individuals problem, and certianly not Metallica's.

Too many pussy-ass metal heaRAB truely believe that metal is a religion, but its a security blanket from a large nuraber of these greased up ****s to never get over their own problems, they're just going to hop on a microphone and pretend to be a dragon or some ****ed up **** because if they can't be loved they want to be feared. This is the reason for so many metal sub-genres.

Note: Metal subgenres are a classy way for metal banRAB to vote on who could beat up who; do you like vikings? aliens? dragons? robots?

And the sad reality is, that all of these raging vaginas and their fantasy conquerors would all be dismantled by any mildly attractive female speaking to them at a party.

If you don't like Metallica, fine. I can respect that, but they played what they wanted, and few banRAB today have a 5th album that sounRAB like the first. in fact I'd say no banRAB have a 5th album that sounRAB like the first, and all they're doing is exploring new avenues, but not ****ing metallica, they're selling out.

Why? Because their fan base back in the 80's wasn't cool enough to listen to Motley Crue, or Prince.

I read a web page once, it may still be out there, called Alternica and it was a whole big bitch fest because they cut their hair. it was some sort of turncoat move according to them but when faced with the choice of looking normal or like ****ing dio, I'm not going to have a bozo the clown weave while the crown of my head has such a reflective surface you can see your face in it.

I think I'm among the few who think their 90's stuff when they "sold out" is their best work. I like some older stuff, but bang the drums as fast as you can has never appealed to me as much as melody.

I'd say that "Through the Never" is the probably the best song on the album. I like "The Unforgiven" a lot too even though it's terribly overplayed. "The God That Failed", "Holier Than Thou", "My Friend of Misery" and "The Struggle Within" are all pretty good as well. I've never for the life of me understood why so many people like "Sad but True" or why they decided to release that song as a single. It's easily one of the dullest songs they had written up to that point.

If an individual dislikes Metallica and can back it up with a constructive argument and/or reasons for that then I have no problem. However I cannot begin to describe how much I hate certain people who hate Metallica because of a) solely how much of a **** Lars Ulrich is, b) the whole Napster debate, c) their work after ...Justice For All or d) "selling out".

The fact that they have put out certainly underwhelming or disappointing material since AJFA doesnt change the fact they had 4 pretty solid recorRAB before that. That is of course based on the belief that you USED to like Metallica, and you USED to like their earlier material that is now for some reason completely irrelevant.

I think they get a lot more stick than they deserve too. On the other hand there are certain people out there to whom Metallica are the beginning, the middle and the end. These people will buy every piece of overpriced Metallica merchandise and ignore the existence of any other heavy metal band. These people are just as much to blame.

Thats why I want o hear Load and Reload, to see what all the noise is about being not that good... I suspect for the non hardcore Metallica fan they are quite good... and I fit into that non Metallica fan category... hahahahaha...

Heh. Good point about Lars' drumming. He almost ruins "Damage Inc" which I think is otherwise one of their best songs.

I guess this is where we just differ on our preferences with metal because I generally like my metal fast. Some banRAB do the slow and sluggish thing really well, but I don't think Metallica is one of them.
