Metallica

I'm pretty much indifferent to rabid Metallica haters and rabid Metallica fanboys alike. I've never been one to let other people color my opinion on a band.

I enjoy the early albums a lot. For some reason I never looked into Death Magnetic.

I think if you can`t evolve as a band (Can`t or don`t want to) then continue to do what you do best and that is what both Motorhead and AC/DC have done. Rock is littered with groups that have tried to evolve their sound and just couldn`t.

Agree, if you put on an AC/DC or Motorhead record you always know what to expect.

I have to say this thread has gotten me to listen to a bunch of my Metallica albums today. I'm listening to Master of Puppets right now and man I kind of forgot what a great song "Fade to Black" is.

I don`t think of Load/ReLoad as being Alt Rock in way shape or form but then again again REM, Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead have all been classified as Alt Rock and none of them sound remotely like each other, so the term is so general and fails to recognize the true genre of the band.

With the exception of some banRAB out there, when I hear the phrase Alt Rock or even worse post grunge, its enough to put me off listening to band straight away.

Well I don't know if the sound quality is as good, but this kid seems to (so far) nail all the appropriate movements. (first time listening right now).

Jethro Tull.

A rock band with a flautist? Totally punk.

I'd say any music that's at least somewhat experimental is by default more punk than 99% of modern punk banRAB. That pretty much means Kansas is more punk by comparison so to give a full list would take forever.

My opinion of Metallica is basically this, the first 2 albums are simply thrash metal, whereas Puppets and Justice are the group bringing in a more complex and progressive sound, this was then followed up by the Black Album which as stated above was designed to make the group the biggest act on the planet, despite not being a fan of the album it does contain singles, big riRAB but most importantly from a commercial aspect a big clean easy to listen to sound, the heaviness is still there but its just all been polished up, which is why so many people everywhere say they love Metallica, despite not being metal fans. I think from their first album to Black is just the natural process of a group seeking world dominance.

Whereas Load is a completely different thing, a hard rock denser sound with a strong blues element and even Lynyrd Skynyrd sound on some songs, no real singles etc. The group were not looking to build on Black but trying something totally different.

I actually liken Load to Led Zeppelin`s Houses of the Holy, Zeps experimental album (not sound wise though) and after the success of Led Zeppelin IV the group just wanted a change of direction and experiment and I think Metallica were seeking to do the same with Load

I'm always going to have an emotional attachment to Metallica regardless of whether I like it or not. And while there are eras of their musical career that I'm apt to skip, I'm not going to shit on them for what I don't like. Bear in mind that most banRAB strive to complete one masterpiece in their lifetime, and Metallica have at least two under their belt.

All the cunts that think Metallica sucks need to disinter their ears from the steaming pile of shit that's covering them and understand that they were one of the biggest musical pioneers of the 1980s. If you throw away all your bullshit stereotypes, listen to Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets and you'll realize that they encapsulate everything that thrash metal intended to accomplish.

It seemed pretty unanamous in the 'do you care if a musician is a ****' that it was the music not the personality of the musician that mattered, but it seems that applys to nearly all artists except Metallica.

I love Metallica. I only own there first 3 album's and heard of the songs off of there other one's. Unfortunetly I had the privelege of listening to St. Anger. I'm sorry, but I just don't get that album. It sounRAB like Lar's is playing on tin can's throughout the songs I've heard. And the lyrics suck "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle". WTF. Anyway if it weren't for those 3 core album's Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets I wouldn't be listening to them in the first place. I've been meaning to get more albums from them thinking about getting and justice for all. Anymore album's anyone suggests?
