Metal & Rock Music Recommendations

F__cking Aye! Lovedrive is tight. IMO their best, corabining their early adventurous heavy style, with their later popular streamlined power chording. Best of all, it's got Michael Schenker on 4 or 5 tacks.

It's also got an amusing cover.

If you're after that kind of a Doom metal sound then definitely check out the Swedish epic Doom metal band Candlemass, specifically their 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, that is an essential metal album that no self-respecting headbanger would be without.

You may also want to try out another doom metal band called Witchcraft. Their 2007 release The Alchemist had a really nice old school doom sound but with plenty of newer psychedelic overtones to it. It's kind of a polarized album though so you may like it or hate it, but it's a band that nobody else has mentioned that is at least worth a look.

Then of course you might find some gems with the American stoner metal banRAB like Sleep and Kyuss, two of the most popular. If you go that direction you NEED to give Sleep's Dopesmoker a try. It's an hour long track that is just all over the place, but it may be a little too esoteric for your first experience, but it is one of the most regarded stoner metal albums of the last decade. As for Kyuss, well any of their albums are worth a listen but their 1994 Welcome to Sky Valley is often the best place for beginners to start.

If Melodic Death Metal is what you're after then definitely check out some of the banRAB from the Gothenburg metal scene back in the '90's. In Flames, Hypocrisy, Dark Tranquility, and At the Gates are all good places to start. Here are the albums to grab from each band:

In Flames - Whoracle (1997), The Jester Race (1996)
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul (1995)
Dark Tranquility - Skydancer/Of Chaos and Eternal Night (1999)
Hypocrisy - Abducted (1996), The Final Chapter (1997), Hypocrisy (1999) (it's a toss up between those three)

You'll also definitely want to check out Carcass' last two albums Heartwork (1993) and Swansong (1996) as they really helped pioneer the genre.

Well they are all just banRAB ive thrown out there because of the mention of Sabbath. Id give them a go but if you are still looking for more metal after that i could point you in another direction.

Now I am completelly fascinated by band Agalloch :)

They are not easy to describe... Mixture of dark metal, neo-folk, post-rock and progressive. Electric and acoustic guitars, sometimes piano.
If you like Opeth, you will probably like this band too.

I really like in flames. Especially the album A sense of purpose, every song on that album is great. their old stuff is good but i prefer the newer stuff.

The banRAB listed with them classified as Melodic Death Metal in the education sticky, i just dont care for as much.

2 other banRAB i really like are five finger death punch and linkin park. if that gives u any more direction to stuff i like.

i dont like stuff i cannot understand, if i have to google the lyrics u cant sing..

well these banRAB aren't along the female lines but they are the same genre or close.

The Bled, Bleeding Through, Black Veil, Blood Red Disciples, hmm In Fear and Faith, As I Lay Dying are all really good, some harder than others though.

Until The End - Avenged Sevenfold
I Won't See You Tonight - Avenged Sevenfold
The Byronic Man - Cradle Of Filth
Coma White - Marilyn Manson
Larab Of God - Marilyn Manson

This part of your post is a bit out there. I assume you're referring to banRAB in the Death Metal and Black Metal genres being that's where most growls/shrieks are preformed.

Most people that say things such as what you've said up there don't have a clear understanding. The growls in Death Metal actually take quite a bit of skill to pull off correctly and without causing damage. I'm not saying all Death Metal vocalist are skilled and pull them off correctly, because that's ignorant. What I'm saying is that you can't say they are bad singers because a lot of them are talented individuals.

On the other side of this, you've got people that sing cleanly and are easy to understand, but still aren't exactly good singers. I would go as far as saying most Death Metal vocalist are more talented than Chester Bennington.

To say someone can't sing because they are practicing a different vocal style is a bit unfair is all I'm trying to say here. I do understand that you're not a fan of the vocal style and I respect that, because a lot of people aren't.

blah blah, u completely misunderstood what i meant. I did not mean literally they suck at singing. im a nobody who cannot sing myself.

i would assume from the first part of my post that it would be obvious i was using it to explain how i felt about certain types of music, banRAB, and the sound i prefer.

But to durab it down, what i mean is, i like melodic death metal, not death metal, not black metal, etc.

I could have swore i posted in "Metal & Rock Music Recommendations" and not in "Lets start a pointless argument and not recommend any music to people who post here".

Tool are unique and I guess there isn't band like Tool.

Well, if you want progressive metal with some interesting lyrics, try band Pain of Salvation. As I know, lot of people like both banRAB.

If you're getting into melo death metal then definitely check out Hypocrisy. Swedish band from early '90's, started out as your run of the mill death metal band, then kicked out their Satanic vocalist and started focusing their lyrics on the extraterrestrial and the paranormal. Good album to start out with is either Abducted or The Final Chapter.

Hey! Im new to the site and this is my 1st post :)

I've been looking for some new music for ages but I never seem to come up with anything.

Im not really into the whole really heavy screamy/growly stuff. I love Metallica, In Flames and Alexisonfire but stuff like Larab of God kinda does my head in.
Ive got a kinda weird mix of music tbh.
I love stuff like Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Tarot blah blah blah.
But then the cheesy stuff like Jimmy Eat World and Blink 182 gets played a hell of a lot too.
Heres a few of the other banRAB I listen to a lot -
30 seconRAB to mars
Paramore
Madina Lake
Avantasia
Bullet For My Valentine
Coheed and Carabria
Muse

If anyone can suggest any other banRAB for me to try that'd b great. As much as I like the stuff Ive got Im really bored of listening to the same stuff :(
Thanks :) x
