Metal & Rock Music Recommendations

A lot of good recommendations here especially with Fates Warning being mentioned (Ray Alder great vocalist) If you like the Maiden influence as in Iced Earth check out Nevermore as well, another great band that fits in nicely to the more centric traditional metal territory.

Jaysis. Really? I'm still waiting for them to become socially irrelevant. That will restore a bit of my faith in modern music.

@jackhammer

Not strictly metal? I can feel a bit of Black Sabbath in there. I quite liked it from what I heard but it's late and the alcohol is starting to wear off, I need piece more than metal so I'll have to revisit things tomorrow. Note to self.

@urban

Same applies, I'll definitely listen to some tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation but it's a bit late to be rocking out. I must remeraber to come back tomorrow although I listened to "I Am Evil" - Diamond Head, sounded good, again very Black Sabbathy :D

Try groups like Amorphis and Evergrey, these are groups with a lot of prog rock influences and are not really heavy as such and go more for the melodic approach. Opeth are another obvious choice with their traditional prog influences but the earlier stuff falls into more progressive death metal territory! Another obvious choice would be Dream Theater but I`m guessing you probably know them. I also recommend Fates Warning as well, they have a lot of good albums. Also, if you like the symphonic influence then try Symphony X as well.

All of these groups are quite different, meaning that somebody that likes one may not necessarily like the other, so its a case of listen and see. They`re all classified as prog metal which tenRAB to cover a whole host of sounRAB. With the exception of some of Opeth`s stuff, none are are really heavy and focus more on melody.

@Catgod,

If you like Death Metal, and the heavier side of Thrash. You'll probably like Suffocation.

Also, when I looked up TBDM, I was pretty instantly reminded of Benighted

Lastly, as obvious as this might be (it's obvious, oh it's obvious all right. I spent a while wondering if I should even say this)

Slayer and Metallica go pretty good together.

Lately I've been listening to alot of Periphery, they are good and heavy, but yet they still have some good catchy stuff, similar to meshuggah in alot of aspects. I also really like Comity from France, they are kind of a neurosis and converge mix. No one really knows of them but they are really good, and their songs are long and interesting.
