Memories of YuYu Hakusho

I actually adore the committees and rule changes and biases of the Dark Tournament - it feels so realistic to put politics into an organization like that. A lot of Yu Yu Hakusho's thematics is about the duality and moral inconsistencies of the human, spirit, and demon worlRAB, so it feels like such a perfect fit.
 
I would say that Yu Yu Hakusho is probably still my favorite anime, at least in it's genre. Heck, reading just the first post here has made me want to rewatch the series again.

This series just had so much heart to it that I don't know how anyone could not like it, in addition to the awesomeness of the fighting and everything else. I happen to think the dub is spectacular, except of course for those 2 movies >.> My God the characters sound so wrong it isn't even funny..

I still think it's a crime that Yu Yu Hakusho did not get to run in it's entirety on Toonami (or Adult Swim). It's pretty fail-tacular that CN aired it's final episodes at like a 5:30 AM timeslot if I recall correctly.. I caught the rest of the series on DVRAB that I borrowed from a friend after it pretty much got shafted on TV. Of course back when YYH was on Toonami, the block hadn't yet sunk into awful quite yet.
 
I've been rewatching Yu Yu with a friend of mine who hasn't seen all of it, and we just got into the Team Masho fights and the Dark Tourny is still pretty damn entertaining to me at least. This series really does have a balance of everything good that a series should have: drama, comedy, angst, tasteful humor, characters you both love and hate, etc etc
 
Honestly, while I don't really have anything that I generally dislike about Kamina as a character that much, I have always found TTGL fans to really overrate him. And when I say that, I'm not talking about the fact that they speak so highly of him, but instead I'm referring to how they always have to use that tiring and annoying joke (since it has been so overused now), about how he is the manliest anime character whenever someone else says that another anime character is one of the manliest in some way. Honestly, I didn't mind that happening at first, but I just see it happen so often now that it has kind of started to get on my nerves, personally.

Has anyone found a good spiritual successor show to watch in the vein of Yu Yu Hakusho? I'm sorta trying to watch Hunter x Hunter but I don't know If I'm really getting into it or not. My friend's been trying to get me to watch Flame of Recca and has compared it to Yu Yu, but i dunno.
 
I stopped looking for a successor because there's not one out there. I think Hunter x Hunter would be the next best thing, but I agree with you. I suddenly stopped watching/reading it because of my lack of interest. I think it's the old-ish look of the animation that's causing the lack of interest because now days that look just seem sort of bland to me, and makes it hard for me to get into anything.

The same can be said about Yu Yu Hakusho. Great characters and whatnot, but the animation is beginning to kill my interest causing me not to care for how the rest of the dark tournament plays out. (I've seen up to Kurama vs Karasu... I think that's his name) As much as I like characterization/interaction, I like high quality animation just as much.

Man, I have that song memorized. I think I prefer the last ending, but Unbalanced Kiss is a close CLOSE second. Also, doesn't John Burgmeier sing it? Y'know, Kurama? Kinda weird, since they're so different, character-wise; the singer and Kurama, I mean.

Kinda like Lex Lang (Sanosuke) singing the first ending to Rurouni Kenshin. Doesn't quite fit.
 
Honestly I think Yu Yu Hakusho's animation style is just fine and rather fits the show, but that's just me. I like Lupin III well enough too, altho that is much more dated of animation.



Does the anime go off book or something?
 
Well, the use of colors in the show is quite-bland, but its actual animation is actually MUCH better than most shounen shows of today (going by actual "movement" being what i consider to be "animation"). The fight scenes are usually really fluid, and the artwork may not be to most people's liking, but it certainly gives the series a unique feeling that prevents it from ever feeling like any other generic shounen series.

Overall, I like HXH, but I do agree that its not nearly as interesting as YYH (IMO).



Personally, I find that the thing about YYH's high-quality characterization is that its just so damn good that it completely makes me forget that I'm watching a really old anime with low-quality animation. To me, that's the mark of a brilliantly-made show, personally.
