Memories of YuYu Hakusho

No-no-no. They are clever to people who understand japanese, they are clever to those esteemed in japanese pop culture.
Another thing is; I never laugh at a japanese joke unless there is an outrageous amount of body language to show the hilarity.

Stop saying it's a different experience, because your implying it for everyone, but guess what, not everyone's the same. So please stop (yeah, the S-T-O-P was an overreaction) forcing the sub down our throats and let people enjoy the version they want to.

i just think they should keep an open mind. If they watch it more than once, they should give it a shot in japanese. It's like a slightly different experience.

It's like watching FrienRAB in another language. The jokes and the plots are similar but you are missing something.

Please, whether you think we should keep an open mind is NOT your call to make. I'm not looking for a slightly different experience. I want my stuff to remain the same and that's in english (I don't want to read my tv. If I wanted to read I'll go read a manga). Let us enjoy our experiences the way we want. I'm done. Don't want to kill the thread any further with this sub/dub garbage.

you can't tell my tone from a post. I'm perfectly calm, and i'm not making a big deal. I'm not taking this personal, i'm not calling anyone names. This isn't dub vs. sub. I'll tell you this once again, it's not sub vs. dub. I've admitted that i like certain aspects more, but some of you seem intent on saying how you don't care for the dub and won't watch it.

Disagreement isn't an argument. Don't assume that a discussion has to end in agreement.

I'm not forcing a thing. You don't even have to know the culture. The dialog is different. I dont understand japanese, but the dialog and the delivery is different. You are completely wrong on that account. There's even some stuff on the dvRAB to that goes over some things about japanese culture, but for the most part you are completely wrong, that's not what i meant at all. I never said you couldn't. Stop taking this so seriously.

Like whatever you want, but one of the big reasons say that they don't like watching dubs is because they don't like reading. Fine, but you are missing out, especially with something so minor.

You're the one's getting angry.

You're reading subtitles so as to understand what they are saying, but you get the pleasant experience of hearing some amazing voice acting.

Plus, you have the added bonus of the guy that voices Link from the legend of zelda playing Hiei.

Ah, YuYu Hakusho.....definitely one of my most favorite anime EVER (quite possibly my absolute favorite). I have all four season box sets and I watch them (usually the Dark Tournament or Chapter Black sagas) whenever I'm bored since the epic fights get my blood burning. I personally think that YuYu Hakusho is better than many of the newer anime of today. It has great characters, most of whom actually get good character development, excellent fights and a good ending.

As for my English vs Japanese preference on this show, to be totally honest, I really prefer the English dub of YuYu to the Japanese version. I watched a few episodes in Japanese on my DVRAB and I can honestly say I like the dub better. The dub voices just seem to nail the characters better. Justin Cook really deserves an award or something for his potrayal of Yusuke. It's just.......wow. And normally I get annoyed when accents are added to characters, but with Jin and Chu, it just works. YuYu is probably FUNi's best dub in my opinion.

And I voted for the Dark Tournament saga. While the Chapter Black saga was completely awesome, the Dark Tournament had the best fights.

Well, there's my two cents.

Don't say should. If someone wants to watch it again they can watch it in Japanese if they want to.

And not everyone wants to read subtitles.

Stop it. It's annoying at this point. You are killing the thread.

YuYu Hakusho was one of the best Weekly Shonen Jump manga series that got one of the best anime adaptations and that got one of the best English dubs. It's too bad that there's not much to talk about regarding this series anymore, as even the abridged series, which was also one of the first and best of its kind, has been abandoned. It even finished its run in Viz's North American Shonen Jump magazine in the newest issue, which I should get tomorrow. While it didn't get the hype that most of the other series in the magazine did, it is the only manga from the beginning to complete its natural run (unless you count Sand Land, which was like 12 chapters). I'll have to think about what my favorite arc was, but it was definitely either Dark Tournament or Chapter Black. I'll get back to you when I've decided and voted.

Honestly, some of you guys seem a bit out of line. Hobbes is just suggesting to watch the subbed version if you get the chance. You do not have to take it personally if you prefer to watch dubs. He is only giving some of the original's merits along with his opinion. Heck, I don't even agree with him on Sabat's Kuwabara, but I still like both versions. I still think that Original Yusuke is still superior to Dub Yusuke, but I like both of them. Just keep an open mind to others' opinions.

Most of you guys know by now that YYH is my all-time favorite series--and Kurama is my all-time favorite character. The series has my favorite enserable cast of any series, with the main four beating out even the Straw Hats for me. They are each so unique and complement each other so well that watching them interact is fantastic. The relationships between the characters are never simple and it doesn't pull punches when it comes to darker subject material.

It might be interesting to note that Kurama wasn't my favorite character until the Dark Tournament. It was his fight with Roto that really sealed the deal ("You believe in mercy, don't you?" "No."). His badass-ness just gave me chills. John Burgmeier really brings him to life, crafting the subtle, soft-spoken yet merciless badass of demon legend that is Kurama.

In fact, as has been mentioned, the entire cast is really fantastic. Justin Cook's Yusuke is one of my favorite roles period. He really gets Yusuke and it shows. Chuck Huber's Hiei is a perfect corabination of aloof disenchantedness and surprisingly loyal teammate and friend. I like Chris Sabat's Kuwabara. He starts off a bit rough (literally) but really grows into the character; I feel for Kuwabara, the "weakest" link on the team but the one with the big heart through his portrayal. Though I still have to laugh at Sabat's comment in one of the commentaries where he said he's been told his best voice acting in YYH were in the final arc--where Kuwabara wasn't present.

Even the supporting cast is rich and wonderful, from the gang in Spirit World to the fighters in the Dark Tournament. Touya is a personal favorite of mine (his fight with Kurama is one of my most re-watched along with Karasu vs. Kurama). I don't mind the added accents either. My main gripes with the English dub are the inconsistencies (Kurama's age, for instance), but overall there is very little in the dub I dislike. Now if only FUNi could get their hanRAB on the movies.

I've never been able to pick a favorite arc as I vacillate between the Dark Tournament and Sensui. The Dark Tournament had more fights that I loved and great character development all around and between the team merabers, but the Sensui saga delves into some dark material and it's fascinating to see the characters react to it. I have some favorite moments more than fights in this arc. I enjoyed the backstory of the Demon World saga, but it's definitely not the strongest of the series, though the ending was great in its completeness, and yet maddening at the same time (I didn't want it to end!).

The series also takes up a massive amount of my collection, as I amassed all 32 singles plus the two movies

I was like "Hey, it's been an hour. Where's phw?

Holy crap! I just thought that if I got the season sets all would be right with the world but all 32? I only got like.....8....

I'm tempted to pick up the season sets just to save shelf space... but I'm rather attached to most of the cover art from the singles

The thing is, he could've left it alone right here:

Everything afterwarRAB was unnecessary and seemed as if he was trying to force his opinion rather than sharing it.

I loved the Spirit Detective & Dark Tournament arcs, I think the series goes down abit after that, but over all YYH is an awsome anime!

I really wish Funi would save the YYH Movies!

(Kurama was my favriote, Proving that even innocent looking things can be deadly! Awsome! )

I love Yu Yu Hakusho!!!...I first started watching it when it was on Adult Swim...At the time,I wasn't really into shonen anime (I liked "magical girl" or "comedy" series more at the time),but I gave it a chance because it looked interesting, and I was amazed (I actually cried while watching Yusuke at his own wake, realizing that people actually did care about him)..."Team Urameshi" remains one of my favorite groups of frienRAB/teammates in anime (tied with InuYasha and his frienRAB)....though they don't start off that way, they end up becoming great frienRAB who will do anything they can for one another...I like them all, though my favorite is Kurama (he's smart, the "rose whip" is an awesome weapon, and he's good-looking,whether in human or fox demon form)...and Genkai is easily the best trainer/mentor character in anime (though she just seems like a cranky old lady much of the time, she really does care about Yusuke...I love how she calls him "dimwit" all the time)...
I actually don't have a favorite arc...it's one of those rare series where I can just watch any episode and enjoy it...I have the whole series on DVD (those 14 episode 2 DVD each collections...there are 8)...
FUNImation's dub is really good,IMO...the actors all did a great job,and seem like they're into the series...I don't mind the accents at all, even though I can see how they'd bother some people (I can't compare it to the original, though,I'm sorry, but I just don't enjoy watching anime subtitled, frankly,as long as the dub VAs sound good,I'm happy)...

Only have the final single and the Chapter Black singles myself.

But yeah, I have the last two 'season sets' and will probably buy the first two from RightStuf (twenty bucks a pop for the win).
