Memoirs of a Geisha

I would be interested to know if anyone has seen this film yet? Does the story make for a good cinematic experience, or is it, well, a bit dull? I haven't read the novel, so I have nothing to compare it against, but from the looks of it, it looks quite a classy film. The +2 hour runtime is a bit off-putting though.

...And because the book was written in English, by an American man. Would've been nice to see a Japanese version of it, though. I loved the book, and I'm looking forward to seeing the film. :)

Saw it today. Have read the book 3 times.

The cinematography is beautiful, the actresses are great.

The film - doesn't come across as hard as it actually was - Hatsumomo was an absolute bitch, doesn't come across tough enough on the screen.

Still a very good film - worth seeing.

Saw this last night, and loved it. I read the book last year and was a bit apprehensive as to how it would work on screen.

However I thought it was very well cast - I felt the characters really reflected how I'd imagined them to be when I read the book. I wondered also if the film would drag on a bit - as I knew it was over 2 hours long and remembered how detailed the book was - but the time flew by!

Only small criticisms were that I felt the ending was a bit abrupt - was expecting them to show the future (I'm sure this was covered in the book). Also the language thing - I think Japanese with subtitles would have made it feel more 'authentic' - I understand why this wasn't done but it still felt a bit strange.

Not sure what my opinion would be if I hadn't read the book first - however really enjoyed it and am now eagerly awaiting the DVD!

maybe its because they are very beautiful and probably anne suzuki was busy that day! :D

ps wasnt catherine zeta jones welsh at one point? :D  :p

is it really possible for the movie to be better than the book? I highly doubt it... that book was one of the best i have ever read. I always have hesitations about seeing great book made movies bc they usually just piss me off. of course, I'd like to be pleasantly surprised but that's going to have to wait until after it comes off the big screen.

I thought this film was excellent. It was visually stunning, the sets were lovely to look at. And how beautiful is Gong Li who plays Hatsumomo? I can't believe she's 40!

I was reluctant to see this movie, but have to say I enjoyed it alot more then expected.

It is beautifully shot and well acted. Having not read the book I can't make any comparrisons, but I still found it to be an excellent film.

Theres bit of Japanese, I heard "arigato" once or twice, and at one point the lead character (forgot her name :/) said "hai" three times. Dunno if these random bits of Japanese are a good thing or not, but they're there. Thinking about it...maybe it was influenced by Serenity :D (Haven't read the book, might be in there).

Anyway yeah the storyline was good but it wins more in terms of visuals, was a very nice looking film. Picked up the book from HMV for

I think you might need to explain that.

Or is it that worn-out "oh but they're not japanese" one again

They're actresses. The casting process was long, they were the best, as thought the casting director. Simple.

And anyway, Bridget Jones was played by an American, as was Emma, and Kevin Kline has played a Frenchman.

Jim Cavaziel was Jesus and he's definitely not the same nationality that the supposed Jesus was...

I for one am quite desperate to see the film :D

Saw this a couple of weeks ago, after having read the book a couple of years ago - as previously mentioned, it is beautifully shot and doesn't feel overly long, however, the ending sucks big time, seemed very lazy (when it got to the end, recognizing where they were at in relation to the book I sat back ready for more - roll credits!!!! disappointing, v v disappointing!
