Media Player Discussion Thread

Tried it but it wouldn't work properly on my computer. When i open it for the first time it tells me auto library has stopped working and the program neeRAB to close down. Ho hum :(

Agree as well. I switched to MediaMonkey a few weeks ago, away from Winamp, and I'm completely sold. It's awesome.

^Interesting link there. Poor WMP...enRAB up looking pretty sh*tty if you go through and check out all the ratings for specific areas. Comes in last or tied for last in every category but one I think. ><

I've never used Itunes, but it doesn't look like it is much of an improvement judging by that battle.

winamp? winamp is crap...

you can play them in Windows Media Player or Napster has a built in player or you can burn to CD or portable instantaneously

there isnt even an endorsed portable player for iTunes and they had to give away free songs with pepsi to get people to sign up because they service is weak. One thing I also noticed when i tried iTunes was that they have barely any songs or at least not stuff i listen to. 9 times out of 10 Napster is going to have a song that no one else has... heh man whatever your loss not mine

On MM I have three categories across the top. It's just like how this guy has Genre/artist/album: example I have artist/album/year. Also I have MM ultra (It's a skin you can get) Looks like this: MM Ultra You can put as many of those filtering categories across the top as you like, and there are plenty to chose from.

It is a laugh. How can you believe that Apple is one of the worst companies.. especially in this conversation. Apple is probably the leader in the arena of audio and visual media. If you go to arts school most schools use Macs. Pixar, one of the hottest new visual media companies, uses Macs in their productions and Apple is always endorsed by a multitude of musical artists in their commercials. Gates may have business applications but when it comes to entertainment media, Apple definitely has the market. And even outside that, Apple has made such a name for itself that you can't call it the worst computer companies. And if that doesn't prove the point there is nothing else to say and no need to respond to factless arguments.

As for conversion, yeah you can convert but you need plugin's you have to find and all so it turns into a pain. Which is one gripe about MS. Always trying to make a monopoly over things.

I've used WMP for years now. It runs slowly if I add all the music in my library, so I don't use that feature... if I did, I'd probably use Fubar which would be able to handle a 500 GB library more efficiently than WMP.

Used to use Musicmatch years and years ago. That wasn't too bad.

By filters, I mean stuff like "1970s" - only music from that decade .. or "norwegian", just music from Norway. 1980s debuts for example. You have to be a little smart with your organizing and/or tagging for searching to work, but anyone who's a little bit serious about his or her collection should be.

If you chip away at my argument, the core of it is that if you imagine you had 200 000+ music files on your computer, then I don't think MediaMonkey would be a good program. From my experiences, I believe Winamp would then be better.

edit :

The functionality you mention in your post is of course also found in Winamp.

itunes looks quite nice, and even though it is very short on features, i would consider using it but for one massive problem - album art. i like to have 700x700 album art for all my music, and if i want to use it with itunes, i have to erabed the image in every single track. this increases the size of my collection by more than a gigabyte, which simply will not do.

with foobar, i keep one copy of the cover scan in each album's folder. then when i sync with my ipod, it gets re-sized and erabedded on the fly. perfect.

Yeah but if you grab something in iTunes you can play it where ever. You don't need to listen to it in Media Player if you don't want to or don't have to buy a portable player of a specific brand if you like something different or better. You have the freedom to use whatever you want. Not that I need another player, this one rocks! But for portable I could play them on whatever mp3 player or mini disc player I wanted to use. Plus! I haven't tested it but I'd be willing to bet you can't play Microsoft .wma files on my linux box.

Why not use vlc player? I had if for about 5 months and it works great, never crashed, supports lots of video/audio formats and has customizable skins. I mostly use it to play flacs tho.
