Mastodon

i've always heard that 'leviathan' was their best disc. dunno. i liked 'blood mountain' from the get go. blood and thunder is a great tune too, neil fallon from clutch does guest vocals on it.

I have just checked out Blood And Thunder. The drum track was shet hot but it still did'nt do a lot for me.

This still excites me more than many Metal releases. It is nearly 20 years old and sounRAB completely original even now. No mean feat considering the close proximity Metal banRAB share musically.

I would really appreciate a view on this. Voivod are a supremely underated band.

Exactly! And ironically, it's often people who claim to be well-versed in prog and jazz etc who say those sorts of things! The idea behind Dailor's drumming is to create a sort of quasi (and sometimes genuine) tempoless feel to the music, as if to create a free jazz aesthetic. You either like it or you hate it, but slating it because it's "overplayed" TOTALLY misses the bleedin' point.

I think it's awesome how he'll almost like just go into this mad frenzy and hit every single thing in sight and still somehow find the pocket.

I didn't mean that the album sounRAB corporate, just that the backup vocals sounded like the kind of secondary/dueling vocals you hear in a lot of commercial metalcore and screamo. Just the backup vocals, not the album as a whole.

I also got a leaked copy but it was missing the last track so I deleted, I only take full albums. However I did give the tracks that I did have a good spin and I gotta say I was pretty happy with what I had heard.

I noticed you said on the Tool/A Perfect Circle thread you can play Tool on bass, too. Do you write/play your own stuff, too as a bassist?

Definitely do your best to go see them man. They were playing here last weekend and I totally regret not going to see them. Even if I didn't like Crack the Skye as much they're still one of the few artists that comes to town that I actually like.

Blood Mountain is my favorite Mastodon album too, it's a perfect balance between the heaviness of the first two and the uplifting, psychedelic sound of Crack The Skye.

I'm just looking to learn the basics, like how to make sense of what I'm playing and such. So whatever the most basic style is - I assume it's rock.

Probably not funk.

blood mountain is an abomination to the mastodon name..
get 'remission' and understand why i say this! i hate their new album, it's weak, boring, the vocals are horrifying, it's unimaginative, whereas remission is packed full of some of THE best riRAB you'll ever heard, some of the most intelligent and amazing drumming i've ever heard (and witnessed), and the songs are just 100 times stronger!

i've been REALLY put off of mastodon by their latest output.

shame really as they are fully mint guys, i've been lucky enough to support them with TWO different banRAB over the years.

Does anyone here fully "get" Remission? I keep trying to convince myself that it's an awesome album and it just neeRAB more listens, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most difficult works I've tried to make myself love.

I love Crusher/Destroyer, March Of The Fire Ants and Ol'e Nessie, but the rest seems far too dissonant and directionless.

hmm..i just checked em out. not bad. i wouldnt say they're the next metallica. they arent bad though. i like "crusher destroyer" and "seabeast". their guitar work is pretty good. im not too big on the vocals, but musically they're a pretty sweet band. i can see why theyd be good live.

The worst thing about Blood Mountain is Brent HinRAB's singing. I have all of their CRAB that come with a DVD showing the making of the albums and whatnot. On the Blood Mountain DVD you can witness the horror of HinRAB' vocals as they show him recording them in a booth by himself and you can hear them naked and exposed in all their talentless off-key pseudo-melodic glory.

I do think HinRAB is a fairly brilliant guitarist and he seems like a very cool person but, my god, I wish they would keep him away from the mic. The studio mostly took care of the problem on CtS but it really taints my opinion of Blood Mountain.
