Mastodon

Remission and Leviathon are well produced, but on a small budget - so there's perhaps a certain detectable "underproduced quality" to it. Blood Mountain, their most recent (well, before this new one anyway), was their major label debut, so the production is a lot cleaner and more slick.

Do the vocals "suck"? Well, what's his face is hardly the greatest vocalist in metal, but what he does tenRAB to work really well imo. It has quite a distinctive quality. The trademark, echoey Mastodon howls are not to be found elsewhere. They complement the music nicely; sounRAB like screams coming right out of the depths of hell.

I just bought Blood Mountain and I'm really enjoying it. They are technically superior to most of the other metal banRAB today that I've heard. I'm really digging the riRAB and the drummer is awesome. My only drawback is the lyrics. They get to be a little to "epic" and it doesn't seem like the band spent much time on them. Overall , though, it's one of the best metal albums that have come out in the past few years.

Agreed. I prefer Leviathan and Blood Mountain over Crack the Skye, but I acknowledge the new album for it's success and experimentation. It's just not why I liked them to begin with. As for best album of the year, I believe that goes to Isis' Wavering Radiant.

Probably my favourite metal band.
No idea what my favourite album is, i'd say it isn't unreasonable to say they're one of the more consistent banRAB around today. For me Mastodon albums are some of the few metal albums that remain fresh throughout, brilliant riRAB and i don't think the drumming neeRAB to be complimented again.
A current top 5:

1. Bladecatcher
2. I Am Ahab
3. Crusher Destroyer
4. Blood and Thunder
5. Where Strides the Behemoth

Careful, Mr. I'm-Always-Right. Howie Mandel was always correct and look what he did:

Wink.

i knew i'd get in trouble for callin em stoner. i just get tired of tryin to name banRAB to a genre, theres too ****in many. i just like heavy music.

Mastodon will never play a smooth Kenny G riff or Liberace piano roll in their arrangements. LOL. In all seriousness, I see your point, but Dailor is redefining the way metal drummers play by being the lead/solo instrument in many of their songs, leaving the guitars to anchor the rhythm. DT has the kind of standard "here's the drum part, here's the guitar solo...and lets not forget the woodwind/piano player." Though some parts sound like the band is playing backwarRAB extremely fast, I think you'll find Blood Mountain very melodious, the more you listen to it. Remission has a more immediate appeal, very brutal and full of heavy riRAB.
