Marilyn Monroe Appreciation Thread

One for all the Marilyn Monroe fans out there! Just wanted to get a good appreciation thread for one of the silver screen's most enduring icons and an actress who was, quite simply, the finest comedic actress of her generation. Before I forget - try and watch ''Something's Got To Give''. It was the film Monroe was working on before she died. There is a great documentary called ''The Final Days'' which has got loaRAB of rushes footage (the film was never completed) - some of it has to be seen to be believed. Marilyn looks at her very best for alot of the film, truly stunning.

Post your favourite film in which Marilyn stars too if you like. Mine has to be ''The Seven Year Itch'' or possibly ''Niagara''. Both are outstanding. I wonder why she was never regarded as a serious talent, it must have been very hard for her. Nobody wanted to accept her for anything other than the ''dumb blonde'', when in fact she was very intelligent indeed. I guess in the end, her insecurities and shady history got the better of her - it's very sad. The whole business with the ''rat pack'' and the Kennedy family at the end of her life is all very unpleasnt too.

I don't really rate her, I'm afraid, but she was in several very good films. My favourite is probably Some Like It Hot, although I also like The Misfits a lot.

I was a massive fan of hers in the 80's.
When BBC2 showed a weekly selection of her best films, I recorded every single one.
The vulnerable character that she portrayed in 'The Misfists' was very close to her own.
I think she was the most beautiful woman ever to grace our screens and the most tragic.
She had an almost luminous glow about her, especially when she sang 'That Old Black Magic' in 'Bus Stop'.
I guess nobody will really find out what really happened to her on the night she so tragically died. :(

Yeah - it's a GREAT movie. Pure genius, actually.

I like her best in ''The Seven Year Itch'' though. Her comic timing is just perfection. She performs the lines like nobody else could even dream of - she was just fantastic.

I can never decide about ''The Misfits''. Monroe is good in it, but the script is bloated and the direction is definatley bottom drawer. Her huge monologue at the end after the horse is killed is amazing though - gives me goose bumps.

I hate to play the ''Hollywood Destroyed Her'' card, but I'm going to anyway lol. One the one hand - it gave her everything she ever wanted, but on the other it magnified her problems to unbearable proportions. Several industry insiders were particually vile to her - including George Cukor (the most over-rated Director ever?) who treated her like a dog during the filming of her last, unfinished film ''Something's Got To Give''.

I consider myself to be a bit of an expert on Ms Monroe and she wasn't as easily led or as vulnerable as she made out to be.

She opened her legs quite freely to JFK and RFK, knowing full well they have wives and children. She had total disregard for her fellow woman, and in some cases that was her downfall.

She wasn't a good actress and would be laughed off the screen today.

Rubbish. True charisma such as she had is as rare as gold dust and will never be ''laughed off screen'' as you put it. Besides, I don't think her acting ability is anything to scoff at - as I said before, just watch her amazing comedy performances and the subtle, perfectly pitched tones of her performance in ''Bus Stop'' and you see what a great talent she was.

The other things you mention were quite rude and you seem to have little or no respect for a woman you never met. Not what I would call fair. I won't comment anymore on what you said, but I've read alot about her and the comments you make about Marilyn are totally and 100% wrong if you ask me. Besides - this is an appreciation thread, you're laying it on a bit thick wouldn't you say?

Are we all supposed to like her to spare your personal feelings regarding her?

She was wooden, she was trashy, she had very little going for her but a pretty face. She certainly couldn't sing.

If you want a proper actress from those days, look no further than Kate Hepburn, Bette Davis, Lauren Bacoll. They were actresses

No, of course not. BUT, why on earth are you posting on a thread clearly titled an ''APPRECIATION THREAD'' if you dislike her so much. Here is not the place to start talking trash about her.

And I will always consider her a fine actress, so will millions of others, so you can call her all the nasty names under the sun but it really makes no difference. I am fully aware of the other actresses you mention and thier work and I like all three very much, I consider myself an expert of Hollywood's Golden Age, so my admiration for Monroe is not due to a lack of knowledge that's for sure. By the way, you spelled Bacall wrong. Good day.
