She was a conservative and the first woman prime minister. She in power for over a decade until the public saw her for who she really was. She once famously quote that 'there is no society' and she's right, there isn't BECAUSE OF HER. She privatised business, and forced unemployment of many of the working class. She ruined Britains economy and she's up her own backside.

Mrs Thatcher was a right wing politician and in the 1980's she championed a moniteriest policy. She broke up the era of consensus government - which is every government had followed since 1945. It was an acceptance of government responsiblities including the welfare state, NHS and the aim of full employment. She believed that the state should have little or no role in peoples lives and that the free market would give everyone prosperity. Her economic belief was a low tax low spend economy and to quote her " to roll back the frontiers of the state" Since 1945 governments had accepted that inflation was a neccesary evil to maintain spending plans, but Mrs Thacher believed inflation was a cancer on the economy as it erodes peoples wealth, in particular in savings. The new economic policy from 1979 was to keep inflation at a low level at any price. She also believed that companies such as British Steel, British Airways, Britsh Telecom etc. and other nationlised companies were stagnating and that competion would give them stimulus and over the years they were privatized. She also believed that people should move away from a NHS towards private insurance and over the years she tried to move the NHS into a free market footing with the introduction of the internal market which tried to create competion between providers. She also believed that Unions were the cause of the problems in the 1970's and severlry restricted their powers to strike and represention of their members. The main anger was caused in 1984 was when she banned workers from joining a Union at GCHQ which is responsible for inteligence reportsd fom MI5 and MI6 for reasons of national security
When Educating Rita was written it was a very turbulant time for the country. Mrs Thatcher's policies had caused a deep recession as the economy went into shock. It was a fundemental change in the nation's politics and policies and people were very worried about the future. There was unrest around the country as riots were breaking out and people felt their job security was under threat by the policies of the new government. Between 1980-82 her government was extremley unpopular but with a combination of a split oppisition and defeating the Argentians in the Falkands gave her a landslide victories in 1983 and the same split in oppistion gave her a landslide victory in 1987. She was forced to resign in 1990 when her party turned against her over the unpopular poll tax which it was clear to see would cost them the election.
