Making Out

Does anyone else remember a series back in '89 called Making Out?

It starred Margi Clarke amongst others and was set mainly in a factory and I remember it being very funny at the time. I do think it was about time it was brought out on dvd or at least repeated (I'm forever checking IMDB etc to see if there is a release date).

Making out was briliant, it also featured Keith Allen & a fantastic music score for it by New Order. It summed up life in Greater Manchetser perfectly in 1989-90. It has never been repeated & there are no legit DVD's videos available. I remember some of being filmed in the mills & housing estates in Ashton & Oldham. Another great bit of TV idling away in the archives

:)

One of those vague telly memorised that flickers in the corner of my head. If anything, I recall the music more than the show. Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert of New Order did the theme, that I definitely remember. The title track ended up (albeit in a slightly different guise) as 'Vanishing Point' on 1989's Technique album. Total classic.

Yes I remember it aswell, it was written by Debbie Horsfield and their must be a reason why it has never been repeated on any channel - long overdue but may now be a bit dated!

I seem to remember at the time there were a few complaints about the amount of swearing that was used..maybe thats why they are a bit nervous to show it again. The lead singer of the Flying Pickets played a character in it I think.

Yes, he did - played Quenie's (margi clark's character) husband/partner.

I loved this programme - If I remember right it was a pretty big programme at the time and it had a few series.

This was definitely one of the best TV programmes ever. I can't believe they haven't repeated it. I would love to buy this on DVD but its not available. The cast was brilliant with a lot of familiar faces. The theme music and incidental music were indeed by Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris of New Order fame in their guise as "the other two". The music was essentially the Technique album without the lyrics. It all added to the magic of the programme. I am sure this would sell loaRAB if it was released on DVD. Come on BBC, you know it makes sense!

Gillbert/Morris 's music gave the programme its 'sound of the northwest' happy sad element. For 1989/90 the amout of sex/nudity/swearing was a bit to much for some. I always remember it for Keth Allens brilliant portrayl as the compnay boss , having an affair & watching him melt under the pressure of it all. Probably his finest work. Margi Clarkes boyfriend was him from the Flying Pickets , his character was chunky i think & he was always wearing leopard skin print undies as i can remember. Realy funny & at times very sad, a class piece of what makes life in the north.

Completely agree.

Making Out is one of TV's long-forgotten gems from the 80s (the other prime contender being Connie, with Stephanie Beacham and Pam Ferris as feuding step-sisters).

My fave MO moment comes from Series 3, where Queenie and the girls are taken to the races and shown a horse they are told will be a sure-fire winner. "This," says the obviously dodgy geezer brandishing the nag, "is The Ginger Minge."

Cut to the horse struggling in the actual race and Margie Clarke shamelessly ad-libbing cries of "Faster! Go On! Ride that Minge!"

Genius.

I seem to recall that Debbie Horsfield wrote all three series, it was devised by Franc Roddam - wasn't he the man behind Auf Wiedersehen, Pet?

Margi's (Queenie) husband was called Chunky. Her from Keeping up appearances was in it too and Her from Coronation street (Rita's foster kid) who was a total b*tch in it - turned out she was a three wheeler too!:D

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a three wheeler?

Anyway, I live in hope that one day someone will rerun Making Out or release it on DVD - it was an absolutely fantastic show, even though I only started watching in the third and final series back in 1991.

You're right, think rhyming slang and three-wheeled bike !:)
Anyone know how we could put pressure on the BBC to do something about repeating or releasing this on DVD. Everytime I have tried to contact them in the past everything is automated, its like having a conversation with a Bombay call centre microwave.
