Mad Men.

Like so many on here, we love Mad Men. We watched the first series simply because I love the women's fashions of the late 50s and early sixties.. I was a child then and couldn't wait to grow up and wear those styles. Sadly, it was all mini skirts by the time I was old enough to buy my own clothes.

I digress. The first season had us hooked. I was so worried the second series wouldn't be as good, that when the second season aired we recorded the whole series with the intention of watching it every night at a later date, but somehow it got forgotten until the 3rd season started.

We found we were so into it that we were watching two episodes a night of season two and now we have caught up with the 3rd season. All I can say is WOW!

It's so brilliantly done. There are little things like the Barbie Doll episode where Betty gives her Daughter Sally a Barbie Doll to make up for the fact that baby Eugene is getting more attention than she is. We leave Sally looking unhappily at the doll.
Don arrives home to spot the doll in the shrubbery, plucks it out and heaRAB up to Sally's Bedroom where she is fast asleep.
He leaves it on the chest of drawers and departs.
Betty and Don are in the bedroom when they here an ear-piercing scream. Don rushes to Sally's bedroom where she is bolt upright in bed obviously staring at the doll which has terrifyingly reappeared in her bedroom.

But the scriptwriters cleverly do the unexpected... As Don hugs Sally, nothing is said about the doll!!

There are also some scenes where we get a glimpse of how Betty feels about her "dull" life.

A couple of episodes ago, we cut to a scene in the Draper household where Betty simply enters the room, walks across to her cigarettes and puts one to her lips and lights it. She inhales the smoke and stanRAB there with her left hand supporting the elbow of her right arm as we cut to the next scene.

Brilliant!! It so cleverly showed how Betty feels about her life.

I loved the play acting between Don and Betty as she is being chatted up by the two Italian would-be Lotharios sitting at the next table. Don arrives and, seeing what is happening, sits at a nearby table and "chats up" his own wife, resulting in the retreat of the two sleazeballs.

Again, so cleverly done. Don is so cool.

As I interpreted it, Chauncey represented an innocence, something that Duck lost, and he couldn't cope with the dog watching him struggle with his desire to hit the bottle (implicitly the cause of his marriage break-up?).

This was then mirrored in other characters: Peggy's discomfort at Pete looking at her 'new' image as she sat on Mr Playtex's lap, and Don unable to cope with his daughter staring at him adoringly.

That's how I saw it - but what do I know? Well, actually I do know that was yet another brilliant episode. I can't think of another show right now that is so consistently flawless.

And yes, yes, yes to Don looking hot last night! :D:D:D Him with the towel round his waist was almost as sexy as the scene with Bobbie ... :D

OK. Better stop that now. Half a day's work still to do ...

Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!

What is the point of paying a License Fee if the BBC just let SKY take some of their best programmes!

Not all of us have SKY or want the programme interupted by adverts!.

I think you're meant to think that, but he was maybe just enjoying the freedom in the waves. Of course, he doesn't know he's possibly about to become a half-millionaire with the merger - but the deal will obviously be predicated on the 2 active partners (Don and Roger) continuing to run the agency for the next few years - Alice Cooper made the point to Roger about the money being for his kiRAB so I can see at least that pressure being applied to Don,

And what we know but the others don't appear to is that Duck is to be President with creative reporting to him! Great plotting.

So assuming the merger happens, will Don go back or is he so out on the loose now he won't. I think he'll go back, his relationship with Anna shows that he sticks to his responsibilities to others, albeit in the oddest way.

That's a bit like saying a Jane Austen period drama is predictable because they wear old clothes and talk posh, or a sci-fi is predictable because they fly around in spaceships.

There's a lot more to it, basically.

Some trivia...

Whilst browsing the Mad Men site on IMDB, I noticed that Peyton List (Jane) was in an episode of 'Sex and the City" called 'Hot Child in the City' Season 3 in 2000. She played a friend of the girl having a Bat Mitzvah that was being organised by Samantha. She's the one on the left in the 4th photo.

As everyone knows already, John Slattery (Roger) was also in S&TC. Again, in Season 3, as the politician that Carrie dated briefly. Small world, etc...

Another one is Philippe Brenninkmeyer (Willy), who played a bartender in Season 2 of S&TC. His family founded the C&A clothing company apparently.

Fantastic news.

This little gem of a series is a real "must watch" and am very happy they have a 3rd series.

I'm so looking forward to watching the 2nd :)

Shame its almost been hidden away by the BBC ....

Don't they look different in their 'civvies'?!

Fun to see Geordie off of Star Trek again - even without his eye covering thingie.

Can't wait 'til Tuesday!

yup we are in 1965 in season 4... well, the end of 1964 in the first 2 episodes, but well into 1965 by mid season.

i am following online and have seen up to ep 7 of this season.

unreal telly.

Its a good point.

We can perhaps hope that they dealt with the script/direction in a tacful way with 'Sally'. In the visuals, we only saw her raise her skirt/pyjamas slightly above knee level. We didn't actually seeing her do what the Mums said that she did.

Then again, presumably Sally the actress was able and/or does watch the actual completed film.

It does flag the difference or not, as the case may be, between a 10 year old fictional character and a real life little girl who is playing the part.

I accept that the groping totally made sense in the context - what I meant is that it made me recoil, and therefore was very effective.

I strongly agree with both those observations. (I wondered if she was typing her resignation.)

I thought she was typing a letter of resignation too! :D I wouldn't blame her after the way he treated her. I really felt for her with the humiliation she felt. I'm really starting to go off Don now...or maybe not! :D

It was interesting when that woman (was it his nurse neighbour?) said to him that he would be married again within a year. I don't think so! I think Don neeRAB a certain type of woman to put up with him and even Bets (who was the ideal trophy wife) had enough of him and got rid.

I always wondered if Don and Peggy might get together...unless she would be too strong a woman for him. I don't know what she's doing with that other bloke and when he was saying about wanting to be her "first", why she didn't tell him the truth that he wouldn't be! I suppose back then it was different and she didn't want to be seen as "easy" if she told him she had already slept with somebody else. And what happened to Duck who she was seeing in the last series? I liked him!

The only other woman I thought Don would look good with is Joan and I always wondered why they never got together...perhaps Don subconsciously knew that Roger Stirling got in there first and didn't want to tread on his toes! :D

Great! CAn't wait. For some reason I prefer to wait for the shows to air, rather than buy them on DVD. There's something a bit special about waiting week by week for the next ep :)

A brilliant end to what has been, for me, a flawless series. Breathtaking writing, acting, directing, design - the attention to detail is phenomenal. I want to watch it all again.

And those cliffhangers within cliffhangers: Don walked out - but then Duck blew it with his new bosses - will they honour their deal with him? The repercussions of Peggy's confession to Pete - what will they be? And those lingering expressions on Don and Betty's faces at the end, with neither of them aware of what the other one has been up to (Don/Dick in California; Betty's attempt at being Don). Just stunning.

Apparently Season 3 will air on AMC in August - so quite why we have to wait until next year is a mystery.

And for anyone wishing there might have been a little more Joan in last night's episode, may I recommend the following ... (apologies if this has been posted already and i missed it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvAlSuqo174
