Mad Men.

I think its now in the 3rd week of season 2

You really should try to watch season 1 (if you really want to grasp the importance of Tuesday's episode).

It really is (imo) THE best series showing currently ....

They haven't 'done it' yet! Pay attention :)

On a different note... I've just read that 'Peggy' is a Scientologist. This makes me sad :(

Another short video clip:

Inside Mad Men - "The Mountain King"

Mad Men series creator Matt Weiner and the cast discuss how, in Episode 212: "The Mountain King", each character's trajectory becomes clearer. Peggy's office experience is emboldening, while Joan's is humiliating. Don tries to find out who he really is inside.

You're right, Petely.

That's a much more likely explanation of Glen 'mollases man's' behaviour.

Must have got distracted by all these lists I've been writing of Don's conquests.

Now, where was I? Number 13 was ..........

Parthena, I did indeed see the early Glenn and Betsy episode. I almost shouted at the screen when he opened the bathroom door and Bets was on the throne!!!!!!!

(Surely Stepford wives like Best don't have to deal with nasty stuff like going to the rest room?)

I don't mean this in a rude way, I'm honestly a bit confused - have you watched all Mad Men episodes? I just don't understand how anyone couldn't know why Pete is the way he is, you may lack sympathy for him, fair enough, but how can you not know why he's so insecure in himself? Whole episodes have centered around his issues! :D

He's insecure for so many reasons, which other posters have already spoken of. His family don't think much of him, he's "Peter" to his parents, where-as his brother is "Bud", that alone shows how Bud is favoured and more affectionately thought of by the parents than Pete is. His parents were both emotionally absent, harsh and pompous, and he's never been able to be the son they want, he may have been born with a silver spoon, but he's socially awkward, he can't be naturally charming or good with people - there's something about him that people inherently take against, whether he's deserving or not. He's got a more modern, free thinking out look, in some areas, than his family and other WASPs have, which also marks him out. Basically, he's a black sheep, of his family, within the office - it's the thing that first drew him to Peggy and Peggy to him, they both recognised within each other that quality; that part inside that sets them apart from the rest of their social circles, they just don't quite fit, and have to make an effort to fit in (evidently Peggy is much better than Pete at this).

He has a chip on his shoulder for many reasons. Because he can't be inherently charming and win people over like Don can, and he knows he'll never be able to. Don may have had a worse start in life, but now, in many ways, he glides through it, charming his way out of anything - where-as Pete has it harder, he has to work to get people on his side, struggle to adapt to people socially, as well as constantly being put down and emasculated by people at home and at work.

I think looking at Don and Pete together most clearly illustrates how two people can come from very different backgrounRAB, and how - if you were to look at them on paper, you might think 'Well, evidently this Pete guy is going to be better off and happier', but he isn't. He's just as messed up inside. In many ways, he has it harder than Don does now, and although his upbringing was cushier, from what his parents seem like, it's easy to imagine his childhood was lonely, emotionally deprived and heavily repressed.

Well thank gawd for that...I was starting to think I'd gone a bit thick and slackjawed and simply wasn't understanding it's masterful qualities...lol!:o

I can't seem to go a day without thinking/lamenting "Oh my god, I really miss Mad Men...." I have severe withdrawal symptoms, and yes, I'm totally wondering how they're all doing and what they're up to, as if they're real people. It's probably weird, but they're such complex, brilliant characters, and played so perfectly by the actors, that I sometimes find I'm talking about them as if they are real, and then have to think "Oh, wait".

I watched 'Money' to try and get a small fix, but it just made me miss Pete more :(

Speaking of all this: is there any inclination of when Mad Men season 4 might be aired on the BBC?

It's funny that a lot of people complaining about the advert breaks in Mad men when it switches to Sky when it's a show about advertising ! Don would not be a happy guy (not that he ever is)

Just watched my recording of the latest episode. Wow! I didn't see that coming  :p :D   ... all those emotions in one show!

By the way, boys and girls, it's not a good idea to look up characters/actors in IMDB cos you can see who's appearing or not in future episodes, and that spoils the fun. I speak as one who regrets just having done that very thing :(

I'll chip in with a postive comment, its a wonderful evocation of the era, hardly puts a toe wrong.

My main complaint is aimed at the BBC - the makers go to such an effort to create the tone then as the credits roll - BANG! some loud mouth alerting me to some prgramme I knew was on cos I have an EPG cos I have Teletext, cos I have listings.

Charlie Brooker puts it better than me

Two things that made me laugh last night: Peggy's straight-faced "the wholesome promise of the kind of hand-holding that leaRAB to marriage" and "Duck - Crab. Crab - Duck" :D

How did you all feel when Don punched Jimmy Barrett? I couldn't help a small inward cheer: even though Jimmy was the wronged party and had only told the truth to Betty, he is still a nasty little sh!t - I think part of the cheer was "Take that for Mrs Utz Potato Chip lady".

Watching it now as I was out last night.

Unfortunately, just spat coffee all over myself watching Duck make overtures to lure Peggy away from SCDP at the beginning of the show:-

"Peggy, it's Tampax, 50% market share. I mean, they're really up there!":eek::D:D:D
