Just watching High Society on CH4(HD) and it really is cool that they got January Jones to look so much like Grace Kelly, if you remember her small part in Love Actually its something I could never have predicted.
I thought that in the scene with Ken he didn't quite hit the mark. In other worRAB, I kinda agree with you, Killary, but he was one of the first characters to "attract" me.
Pete is played by Vincent Kartheiser, a pop musician I believe, and here's a snippett from IMdB:
"In an April 2010 interview with The Guardian (UK) newspaper, Kartheiser revealed that after experiencing some of the material excesses of Hollywood (such as awarRAB shows where already-wealthy people receive gift bags full of expensive free items), he started a process of shedding his possessions that includes selling or giving away most of what he owns. He told the interviewer that he now no longer owns a car (even though he lives in Los Angeles, a city that is notoriously difficult to get around in without one) and he moved into a very small one-room house that doesn't even have a toilet in it."
I must concur with the above - absolutely brilliant series. Having missed the first series I was curious as to what all the fuss was about & I really was not disappointed...the acting, the silences, the mood, the style - superb stuff!
& there's nothing like an impending nuclear holocaust to oRABet revelations left, right & centre is there?!
I've gotta get my hanRAB on series 1 & catch up...bit annoyed that I have to really as most of what went on was revealed in this series.
Oh & that Joan video is great - now that's what I call a lady...not these skin & bone women we get nowadays!!
Funnily enough, I'd seached for a forum too and hadn't spotted one, but was really keen to say something! (Having read the comments on the other thread, I'm sticking to this one!)
I'd Sky-plussed the show and started watching it over the weekend and I'm absolutely hooked! It's sublime, from the oh so cool opening credits to the carefully chosen song at the end.
I love that the pace is so slow! I love the interesting, complex characters. I love the attention to detail.
Not since The West Wing have I enjoyed a series so much.
I don't think Don has told anyone ever, what he told Rachel.
A nice nod to the conversation Roger and Joan had earlier. I also loved when the senior partner Cooper told Joan she could do better than Roger or any of the other creeps she brings home.
Mighty Blue, I envy you seeing season 1 for the first time. Don't worry, there is plenty there to chew on, you'll learn so much more about the characters, and so much artistry in the writing, acting, and production.
Missed the 1st season & having to catch up...thought Tuesday's episode was excellent. My, Don is having some serious guilt trips & facing a few home truths, bless 'im!
& I gotta admit - I'm a red-blooded male & can't get enough of seeing Joan's hips sway from side to side!
I emailed the beeb about the scheduling of MM, suggesting they could make better use of what is a "prestige" product. It should be at 9 pm rather than 10.
I did indeed get the info from today's newspapers or I would not have mentioned it; it wasn't pessimistic speculation on my part.
If MM did get dropped from BBC and another channel picks it up, I would imagine that all the fans would seek it out however remote the channel is. After all, it's only a 2-3 number press away, it's not like we have to crack a code in order to watch it.....Oh, hang on, I seem to remember the 'Secret Channel' 12005 for Big Brother which used to take a bit of configuration!
Thanks for the linky, I suppose us Mad People better speak up!
Yes, I agree, one thing that sets the show apart is how a single word here or there carries so much weight. I think the show is really reaching new heights now. I wasn't sure about the Colin Hanks (son of Tom) priest character but I think he's worked very well. He's part of the general pattern of the show opening up out of its bubble; the world is coming into the offices and homes and vice versa.
I can hardly see Mad Men fitting in with that channel's profile ...
The BBC has said it plans to cut back on US imports but I would be very surprised if Mad Men was a casualty of that policy. It brings the BBC too much kudos.
I would predict that Mad Men will continue - but we will see other new US shows taken up by other channels, not least FX.
The only beef is that Series 4 will begin in July in the US. Why exactly do we have to wait until January 2011 to see it? Why not show it in the autumn this year?
Ep 3 seemed a bit stilted to me. The strange bar conversation, the politico who makes a pass at Betty - not up to the usual, deep, slow-burning standard. Were differnt people involved in that episode, I wonder?
The grandpa/little girl storyline seems to be heading in a particular direction which I hope doesn't happen - it would be horrible . Hopefully it'll be another unexpected twist in the tale.
Thanks Tortoiseperson for the article. Very interesting. I remember a lot of those objects from my childhood; they don't seem like antiques to me. I'm amazed that so many places cut ice by hand during the period.I think the commenters are right- I remember we had the metal trays for making ice that we put in our freezer. I remember ice machines in supermarkets in the late 60s and early 70s.
Good point. Although, the constant downing of two fingers of scotch from chunky crystal glasses has invoked a sudden desire in me to make a trip to the local offy/pub
On the subject of ratings, above, I'm puzzled because I saw a page (think it was a Beeb page but can't be sure) which listed over a million for the 1st episode, then around the 800/900,000 each for the 2nd & 3rd. Where did the Guardian get their 232,000 from then?
Who on earth was the young boy besotted with Bets? I understand he was a neighbour's son, but not having seen the first series, just wondered what the history was there?
