Hi Legal,

Not sure what your Doc. wrote it looks like he's ruling achalasia...however never hesitate to ask the Doc any questions if you don't understant call him back and have him explain it better for you........

There might be a chance of both conditions occurring, but then again the tests should reveal the conditions without any doubt.......

Well, it looks in the first paragraph that you already know what to do to counter attack the BB....................eat soft smaller meals at very slow pace (very small "bolus" since the doc already diagnose the abnormal condition with it) you would probably want to switch for a tiny teaspoon instead of a fork or spoon, to regulate the size of the bolus......don't expect the BB to go away that fast.......you probably have a bacterial super-colony well over-populated ready to break down those fooRAB that get stuck in your chest.....makes a lot of sense....is actually a defense mechanism to protect you.... there aren't going away that easy...............but the first thing to do is make sure that nothing gets stuck ever again...........whatever it takes.......even if that means switching to liquid fooRAB.........(ensure for example)...I did it for 2 weeks after my surgery.........liquid diet.................And get a competent Doc. to resolve the underlying condition...........there is several different ways to treat achalasia.............

If you contact here let me know. Where did she have th procedure done in Texas?

Has anyone else experienced this? One on the first symptoms I had was halitosis and bad taste. I started taking a PPI 2 weeks ago and so far I feel great but the bad breath hasn't cleared up yet. The other sympoms ear pain infections, sore thraot, execssive mucus/asthma complications, breathing problems, sinusitis problems(I had alot of sinus infections and congestion) have all cleared, almost instantly within a few days but I still have halitosis.
The bad taste in my mouth is even better. I am just windering how long it will take to get rid of the stench. My docotr told me it would take 8-12 weeks for the damage to my esophagus to heal and that most of his patients were able to get rid of the bad breath then as well but I am hopeful that it will be sooner.

The smell is a rotten egg strong type of smell and its certainly related to all the gastric acid I coughed up on a daily basis because I didn't have it pre-LPR.

I have no idea what the hell is wrong with me but I started to really pay attention to the symptoms I 've been having. Today I ate something for breakfast at 8:15 am. By 9:00 I experienced nausea, excessive phelgm and the sticking of food feeling. By 10:00am i experienced the chest pains and the shortness of breath and the bad breath seemed to get worse as well. It happens everytime I eat something, except fruit. Last night when I lay down to go to sleep I felt as if I was choking on my saliva. When I don't eat the bad breath gets worse almost bareable. I plan to stop eating solid food for a week or soo to see if I get better.

I have the gastric emptying of Friday and the barium swallow next Wednesday.

I have no clue what I have but its really not looking like LPR at all.

Hi Legaleagle,

I had the Nissen Fundoplication back in June, it's not the magic cure for our problem, but it certainly helps. (about 50% better). LPR is just the trigger for the sinus issues (PND) which in turn is only the food for the main problem: "Anaerobic Bacteria in the tongue and throat"(Fusobacterium, Veillonella, T.denticola, P. gingivalis, Bacteroides and Peptostreptococcus). The mucus also serves as a retainer of food particles (like a trap) for the bacteria to hydrolize the proteins and degrade it to amino-aciRAB resulting in the release of the VSC's.

With the Nissen I gained an advantage in the battle since the PND have been greatly reduced. But is not to take for granted. Stay away from spicy fooRAB, and anything containing the main 2 VSC's producing amino-aciRAB (cysteine and Methionine ) all dairy including Whey protein (found on unimaginable fooRAB),eggs, onions garlic,peppers.........

I came to realize that is a multi-front battle..........from aerophagic issues (mouth breathing) resulting in dry mouth, sometimes mistaken with xerostomia, low blood oxygen (unbalanced PH) also from the breathing issues. Bacteria reaching sinus (BB when exhaling from the nose), unbalanced mouth bacterial flora, Tonsil stones, coated tongue, hairy tongue, and that's assuming a perfect oral hygiene (no bleeding in gums or cavities or any teeth issues).

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions, I'll be more than happy too share my experiences. I'm a veteran on this war.

All,

I had an EGD done on Friday and I went to get my results today. My doctor now has a new theory after reviewing my PH study with the endoscopy--he thinks its achalasia. I am so confused. He told m to stop the Protonix, which I had done already a few days ago because he no longer thinks I have reflux at all. Instead he seems to want to zero in on the difficulty swallowing portion instead. Funny thing is he went over my manometry and PH tests from 2006 and it showed I was having problems swallowing and of course this was my chief complaint, but they gave me Protonix and I took it. I've been taking it two years but I didn't get any better. Achalasia is opposite to acid reflux in that the LES doesn't open properly the way it should. I am unsure how I feel at this point because each time I think I got it figured out and that Ill be better I am not. One symptom of Achalasia is bad breath so at least that explains it. Also, the difficulty swallowing and regurgitation makes since as well but how could one confuse that with LPR. Guys, I am so cufused, I just can't understand how I could go from sucessful, happy person to sick, miserable, with this horrible exbarrassing odor from my throat.

Hi everyone! I hope you are all hanging in there. I know everyday is different. I had a good day yesterday and didn't take the prilosec because I seemed to be feeling great. Now...today I felt kind of cruddy. I kind of paid for it and I didn't eat the best. ugh!

What I find that has really helped me is taking 2 food enzyme capsules before I eat that helps me digest food better. I take an acidophelus tablet that helps the flora in my stomach stay neutral. I got the colloidal silver spray to spray in my throat for the soreness back there. It is amazing. It got rid of my canker sores in 2 to 3 days. I also bought papaya/mint chewable tablets that are great for digestion and fresh breath, and I bought natural sore throat tea made out of licorice and slippery elm which is fantastic. Those are my recommendations of natural products to try to help out with acid reflex problems. I hope it's helpful. I am finding my way one day at a time and one product at a time.

With the gastric emptying, they give you something to eat (mine was stew laced with dye) you eat it and then they place you on the table and scan your stomach for two hours. The scanner takes photos every minute to analyze your digestion process. The good thing was the usual occurence I get of chest pain and feeling that there was something stuck there was present but not the shortness of breath I normally get.

You stay there for two hours. You can actually view the computer and see the items in your stomach but I couldn't really tell whether it was going well or not. Anyway after the test if your digestion is working properly their should only be a portion of the food left, if there is more then you have slow emptying. Honestly, I hope it comes back and finally gives me an answer to my suffering over the past two years. Isn't that a crazy statement, I hope that the test shows there is something wrong with me:(

Hi Legal,

It looks like you are on the right track. Keep up the fight. Like I said before, in my opinion you have to deal first with the underlying condition then with the BB. It won't go away that easy....but I assure you it will go away with the right approach.

I had a gastric emptying test today so I should get the results back Monday or Tuesday. I hope finally with this test I'll know what's wrong to me and what's been plaguing my body for the past two years. I really hope this will be it. I didn't feel any different during the test though.

Oh gosh, I never thought someone would post something so similar to my situation and I've been dealing with this for 3 years. Legal, click on my handle and read my posts and you'll see that I use a lot of the same language. Unfortunately, I've still to yet beat this problem and I was on PPIs for 5 months, half of the time on double doses. It didn't help the rotten egg smell.

I don't have "normal" halitosis, it's not bad breath all the time. What I get is a more like flatulence, but instead of it coming out of my rear, it's coming out of my mouth. And no it's not burping. It happens when I'm breathing normally or talking. Strangely, when I do burp there isn't the odor.

I restarted the GI testing process once more. Had a stomach emptying test this morning (it was normal) and will get an endoscopy next week. I had an endoscopy 2 years ago and it was normal.

legaleagle,

Was this test bad for you? I didn't want to say it but that was one test that I will NEVER do again. Or, maybe it was the motility that I hated? What did the gastric empty test consist of? Hope you're feeling better and get some "straight" answers soon!

I guess that test went good for me because I remeraber them saying I didn't have a problem with emptying. But, I was put on Reglan, which if for rapid emptying? That stuff may help me and I'm happy for them but it made me into a zorabie.

Wishing you good luck and some ANSWERS in the next few days. Just thought of a reason I might not have bad breath. I have no teeth, thanks to severe reflux! 35K worth of dental implants in my mouth now. I chew gum though day and night. Mainly because it keeps the juices going and helps keep me from coughing so much.

The surgeon was from Dallas and she lived close by I think it was a Baylor hospital in Dallas. I'll check the info I printed and saved or you might try a search for it.

I know several people that have had the fundo and weren't all that happy with it. Plus having to have to do it over! Some still have to take meRAB and as the other poster wrote, watch what you eat. You would think if it's helps the LES then it would help keep acid from going over the upper sphinter? When I get SOB, I have panic attacks sometimes and of course the reason I get SOB is usually stress. You can't win.

Thanks for the advice. I plan to try the collodial silver it can't hurt at this point. I will go to the health food store later today. If anyone had remedies or things that help let me know I will try it all.

I have an upper endoscopy planned for the 18th of this month so I am crossing my fingers and hoping the smell will magically get better in the meantime.

I've decided to go forth with the surgery, I can't keep living like this. I am in my 20's but I've wasted almost two years with this crap. I've gone from outgoing to this person who avoiRAB human contact its not much of a life at all if you ask me. I haven't been on a date in over a year-boy I miss being normal, I think I took it for granted. The surgery is a plication type of procedure done similar to an endoscopy and hopefully I will have it done by the end of the month. Cross your fingers for me.

My symptoms and diagnose are of the LPR type of reflux now. I know most people who have the surgery do it for the GERD diagnose but do often have LPR symptoms as well. I feel that my stomach is healed for the most part as no inflammation shows up but then how can it be since the acid has to be coming from there? My chronic cough feels like it's due to PND but I also feel like the PND is caused by "whatever" refluxes up. It gets very bad when I bend or lift things. I can't even imagine what it would like to be "normal" again and not have these choking, sniffling, coughing fits that come out of no where sometimes. I'm too scared to have the surgery (which, my Dr. doesn't recommend) for the fact that it won't make these symptoms go away. Especially since nothing else ever has. Were you diagnosed with only GERD?

hi i have really bad LPR but have just started on PPI but i dont have bad breath...........i make sure i take lots of raw honey throughout the day as it sooths the throat and has anti bacterail qualities that kill bacteria......i am from NZ and my mum is a nurse and said that they use honey on wounRAB and burns because it stops infection and helps heal...........i eat about 4 tablespoos of the stuff a day, and its yummy.......make sure you buy organic raw honey that hasnt been heated. manuka is the best but expensive, the darker the colour of honey the higher enzymes and healing qaulity.

Char,

You sound like you might need the surgery, have the condition double check again........long term effects of reflux may include Barrett esophagus a very serious condition......

Do you have your lower jaw recessed to the back, it's possible to have breathing issues that end up in LPR (I had them) and I'm still in a self training in order to correct those problems.

I have all your symptoms too. I just finished my first month on prilosec. I am still not well. The doc told me to do a second month and then if it's not cleared I go in for a scope. That is NOT what I what to do. I radically changed my diet. No caffeine, no alcohol, or chocolate or spicy food. I am so mad about this. The only good thing is that I have lost a solid 8 pounRAB! I am happy about that. The other thing you may notice about being on ppi's if I may be graphic, is that I became constipated. And instead of having several bm's a day. Now I go a couple of days. When I do it has a real bad smell. (Well bm's all do) But this is different. It's almost like the medicine gave it a real bad smell. Sorry but it's a fact. I am just sick of this whole ordeal.

I am going with as many natural products as possible. Today I picked up a silver spray that you can use anywhere on your body. It is an amazing healer. I am using it for the sores on the back of my throat cause by the acid reflux. It is my first day on this but I will let you know how it goes. Good luck!

I have about a million questions but first off, do you feel it was really worth it? I'm having a rather good day today but I know during bad flares, I'm ready to cut my head off!
