legaleagle,

It's no wonder we stay confused! Same with me in the beginning. One Dr. said it was reflux, another said it was allergies, another motility.....I have no problems swallowing anymore. I think I would go with this Dr. as your symptoms sound like it could be more than LPR or GERD. Maybe there is a completely different kind of med for this problem. Maybe hope that "something" can get you well, be it meRAB or surgery! If I remeraber correctly, I was checked for this in the beginning of my journey. To tell you the truth, I'm still confused after 10 yrs!

Please keep us up to date and I'll be thinking about you. Best of Luck.

TEDEdwarRAB 83,

What kind of spray is it? I am sto happy to hear I am not the only person, its so frustrated having bad breath that comes from this and I agree its not like bad breath its a flatulence type thing but its constant and pretty offensive and erabarrassing. I had it really bad today and I took extra acid meRAB and the smell improved 50% so I am sure its from the acid reflux but the meRAB just don't help completely. I feel better when I take them not as much pain, but the smell doesn't go away completely as does the reflux I still have breaththrough. Today I have really bad ear pain and a bad taste in my mouth all from reflux after I had a few cough drops.

I have it more often when I eat too much. I barely eat anymore! My mother asked what I had yesterday and I was suprised when I said it out loud. A bagel with cream cheese and a few raisins for dinner, that was it. Each day I do the same thing very little and I feel 100% better, I tried chicken breast, baked beans, and potato salad for the 4th of July and I paid for it.

It's crazy I am always so worried about how much to eat I barely eat. I have potato chips and water for lunch usually, sometimes I'll spice it up and have soup or broth on my "wild days". For dinner its even less but still it doesn't help the smell.

I saw a specialist in NY a few days ago and he wants to try a new endoscopic procedure to help tigthen my LES. My manometry test was irregular, my swallowing is not complete, my LES doesn't close. I was thinking whether to have the surgery or not because its so new and there aren't real results (i.e. percentages of patients who needed meRAB after it or who needed additional surgery) but its starting to look pretty good.

Thank you guys for letting me know I am not alone.

I've been very interested in the surgery you are talking about but so many (including Dr's) don't think it will cure the LPR kind of reflux. I don't blame you one bit for going with surgery at your age. It's worth a shot and I wish you the very best of luck. Please keep us posted on this.

BB,

You know my jaws do look lower???? I figured this was due to losing all my teeth even though I have implants that are supposed to keep you from losing bone. I was 48 at the time I had the extractions and 55 now so just thought I was getting old looking. LOL. I am supposed to have regular scopes and probably need to have another soon. The last few don't show much in my stomach, which is good news but the bad news is that with LPR you are more prone to throat cancer or vocal cord disfunctions. There is no protection from the acid that comes up that high whereas there is some in the esphogus. Believe me, I have checked out several surgeons and if I could get my life back, I'd do it in a minute. Seems they aren't so sure it would help me with the LPR symptoms, which are much worse than my GERD now. I think the PPI's do help get your stomach well but I'm not so sure they do much for LPR. I take them because I'm so afraid of getting cancer and not sure if they would even help. Bad thing now is that when I get off of them, the heartburn is sooo bad and I never even had it in the first place before. I have been interested in the "pleat surgery" as that sounRAB like it might be possible to help with LPR.

I got a gastroparesis test last week and the results were normal. I will have an endoscopy tomorrow.

Legal, so your bad breath is constant? Mine seems to come and go, my bad breath seems to come in vapors that are deadly.

EdwarRAB, I think constipation is not an uncommon side effect of PPIs. I certainly had it when I was on PPIs. It was one of the reasons I stopped taking PPIs. If the PPIs were working well, I'd have put up with the side effects but the results weren't worthwhile. You may want to try citrucel which is a natural stool softner and apparently is fae to use daily.

BB, I'm fascinated by your mention of a recessed jaw, but I'm going to start a new thread asking you about it, since I don't want to be too off topic. Please look for the new thread if you have a moment...

Hi Char,

Yes, LPR + GERD....some Dr's don't recommend the surgery, but then again it's a very delicate procedure and the success of it will rely on the experience of the surgeon, and in the other hand, it will no get rid of 100% of the symptoms is more like 80% better. Especially in the morning I use to wake up severely congested....not anymore.....there may be more than one underlaying condition, that neeRAB to be dealt separately, like aerophagia (excessive belching.........the pnd makes the mucus accumulate in the throat and the need to swallow........ when you do you are also swallowing air which will bloat your stomach and input additional pressure on the LES and when you belch its likely to come up not necessarily with the aciRAB but the fumes that will cause your sinus to inflame and start pumping mucus again).........it's a hard to break cycle..............or just issues with food.....eating too much at the time, drinking to much fluiRAB while eating, spicy fooRAB / junk food, lactose intolerance (dairy products).......you might be pressing your stomach up with your abdominal muscles to "hide it"..... not a good idea....better is to relax it and walk as straight as possible ...different people show stress in different ways, you might be showing stress through your vagus nerve which controls the stomach movements and maybe gets too upset...mouth breathing....all of those will make the situation worse..........I had all of them.........basically I took every possible countermeasure there is ........and as I last resort the surgery........so I got to that point and I did it. Scared ? there is no way not to be...........determination help me out.

Legal,

Don't be so sad, the most important thing is to determine the underlying problem and it seems like you or your Doc are on the right track. What I do....is complement the advice of my 5 doctors with my own research just to make sure a miss-diagnosis does not happen. LPR - Achalasia they maybe similar symptoms but it is obviously not the same condition......To truly rule Achalasia my Doc ordered a "Bagel" Barium Swalow 30 degree test. I ate a piece of bagel dipped in barium while lying in a horizontal position facing down and inclined 30 degrees towarRAB my head, then multiple x rays shots were taken (like a movie of the ability of the peristaltic waves to push the food down).............. I believe there is surgery fix for that, check with your Doc.

So that's probably what's trowing your bacterial flora out of balance.....the food gets stuck for too long in your esophagus activating anaerobic bacteria overgrowth (the throat and esophagus are probably trying to digest the food right there)........and it gets confused with a heartburn when in reality is a chest pain..... Do you feel like food is getting stuck in you chest ? Let me know....

PD: I posted a new strategy on a different thread. Look them up under Chronic BB.

I have a similar problem and I am looking to purchase halitonic and oramd to see if they will help. Is any one familiar with these all natural products? I have been using therabreath/dr katz products but they only offer temporary relief mostly around the mouth. The malador seems to come from the gut or stomach.

Char,

You are correct so many doctors say they don't think it works but the doctor I found is great he's been doing it for 7 years now. He shys away from Endocinch but he does a plication procedure and it seems pretty good. Most of his patients no longer takes meRAB at all and he has a few that take meRAB every now and again. Honestly speaking, I wouldn't mind being either of them-both are much better than where I am now I take meRAB daily and watch what I eat but I still have "episodes".

The thing is he was upfront: I will never be as I was pre-acid reflux, Able to drink and eat whatever, whenever. I won't be that way with the procedure but it will decrease my dependency on PPI's and the meRAB I am currently taking and leave me with incisions or the complaints many people who have fundoplication.

BB,

Yes, I have perioRAB when it feels like there is something in my chest constantly, especially after I eat heavy fooRAB. It seems like it takes forever to go down. But, there are days when I don't feel so bad as well. Last night I had only fruit and my breath smelled a little better today, just a little its still very bad. I can't explain the best analogy is I feel I have a tight turtleneck on all the time. Does that make sense? After, I eat a regular meal of heavy fooRAB, my chest begins to hurt and I feel as if I can barely catch my breath, the next day my breath is so so bad.

But on the other had, I feel my throat slightly burning yesterday and I took Ranitidie and I felt a lot better. There is no way I have acid reflux achalasia.

Have any of you had an negative pH tests but still have acid reflux? Both tests didn't show much acid reflux. I took the one in 2006 sans reflux meRAB and nothing. I took this one with acid reflux meRAB and all the acid exposure was normal. My doctor wrote" Normal acid exposure. Abnormally elevated impedence measured reflux while on PPI. Abnormal bolus transit swallowing Z test with 40% CBT What does this mean?

There was an article in "Good Housekeeping" about this procedure done on a lady that lives about 2 hrs away from me. She had many of the same symptoms I have such as SOB, hoarsness, contanst cough, sniff, choke kind of thing and it was quoted that she threw a dinner party afterward and ate everything to her heart's desire. I wish I could contact her and found out how she is today. I don't think the procedure works as well on LPR patients although she sounRAB like that was her problem. Yeah, if I could just take "the purple pill" and go about my business, I'd be forever grateful too.

Please keep me posted.
