Big movie fan so thinkiing on joining one of these online rentals....

which one would you recommend? For new releases/service etc....which is better?

Blockbusters, only because it took 4 months and multiple phone calls to cancel Love Film, and then another two months of arguing and correspondence to get a refund on the money they took after saying they wouldn't.

I'm using lovefilm now and having no issue - but it's a shared account and I don't deal with the finance side of it (just give the guy the money). It's a good, fast, service and great for games

horses for courses really - many use lovefilm and have zero issues with it, but some seem to have monumental issues.

i'd check out the library on each site and go with the one that has the most films you want to see.

lovefilm are more likely to do you a deal as well - i regularly manage to talk my way into a "buy one month, get two free" deal.

there's also extended free trial codes out there as well ..

I haven't tried Blockbusters but I can wholeheartedly recommend Lovefilm - I've been a member for years, and never had any problem.

Payment is easy (I pay yearly - really decent discount), the website works well, and they are generally pretty quick at turning over the DVRAB and getting new ones sent out to me.

I'ver never been sent a wrong DVD, and I've only ever had one DVD which wouldn't play due to damge - so I sent it back and they immediately replaced it with a new copy.

I'm interested to know how Blockbusters compares though.

I have been with Lovefilm for several years now and have had no major issues. I pay monthly by credit card and 12.99 a month gets me unlimited DVRAB so I have 2 at a time at any one time. (they also do free credit things occasionally so you get 3 at home at a time)

I think the main quibbles with Lovefilm tend to have been when people mistimed cancelling/sending back DVRAB and then ended up paying when they didn't want to when they were trying the free trials.

One thing to remember with Lovefilm (not sure how Blockbuster works) is that you keep a list of the DVRAB you want to rent and give them a high medium or low priority.

You cannot say I want to watch this DVD on Saturday and then expect to get it you will get one off your list and it may not always be one of the high priority ones either.

I have over 250 on my list I am interesting in watching but then I don't always want the latest releases all the time. If you want to try and do this you have to keep the shortest list possible!

You can also watch films online - depending on which subscription you take out. You can watch some for free - but some you have to pay for up to about 3.50 I think - I am not interested in paying more than my sub though so I have never done this.

lovefilm (don`t know about blockbuster) are having a hissy fit with Universal films, so new films from them you can`t rent.

but with lovefilm, if you have a tesco card join there version and get points and cheaper deals (i just got

At the moment, BLOCKBUSTERS. Lovefilm are having trouble with film companies and can't rent out certain new releasess/films that are from those companies. Blockbusters are fine and have the films lovefilm don't.

Join lovefilm once they have sorted the mess out.

Can I have an S, please Bob. :D

Anyway, Blockbuster's turnaround times are very slow, and I know from experience the playability of its Blu-ray discs is too variable for comfort.

LoveFilm have some very sharp practices which you have to watch out for so you can take preventative measures. Its free trial TV advert with "no late fees" is utterly misleading unless you're prepared for what they'll try to do to scam money out of you. I actually complained to OFCOM a few years ago.

We're with LOVEFILM for about a year and changed to BLOCKBUSTER recently, which for me has the slight edge in that you can print off tolkens and get either a free rental, rent 1 get one free,10% off of dvRAB.blurays etc. Down the personal choice and what they stock.

We've been with Blockbuster for a year and not had any problems with turnaround times. They get a DVD in the morning and a new one is sent out in the afternoon, not sure how much more efficient they could be.

I think I managed to get 3 discs out of Blockbuster in 2 weeks, and one of those was unplayable and had to be returned. Come Wed of the second week of the trial, I took everything off my list as I didn't want them doing a LoveFilm and sending me out discs on the last day of my free trial so they could charge me a full month.

If you have to return a damaged disc, Blockbuster won't send you anything else from your list. If you're on a 2 discs at home package, and they send you a duff disc, you'll be on a 1 disc at home package for a week, while still paying for the 2 disc package.

So, if you receive a disc in the post in the morning, settle down in the evening to watch it, find it doesn't play, and return it the next day, you'll lose 4 or 5 days of your paid for package just trying to get BB to send you a playable copy of a film you've ordered.

Day 1 (Monday) - Order disc on website

Day 2 - BB send disc

Day 3 - You get disc if you're lucky, although day 4 is more likely given my experience

Day 4 - Return faulty disc

Day 5 - If lucky, BB receive faulty disc

Day 6 - BB send replacement.

Day 7 - Sunday, no post.

Day 8 - Receive replacement if lucky.

8 days to get one film. No thanks.

I'm not saying the above won't apply to LoveFilm, but I found BB's turnaround times to be like watching paint dry.

I know there isn't but for some reason I always add the s on the end when I type. I say it correctly when speaking the word, but then really who gives a shit... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Not my fault things do your head in so easily...

Must be you. I've never had a problem with BLOCKBUSTERS and their blu ray discs and I've been renting blu rays from them since the beginning of the year. Also, I find them faster than lovefilm. That was the reason I left lovefilm, too slow. DepenRAB on the person and their luck. :p

Will give you my honest opinion as I've been with both over the last few years -

Lovefilm's turnaround times were crippling for me. I'd post discs back on Monday and it would be Friday or Saturday when I would get new discs. Their catalogue is also poor - they are in dispute with Universal, as others have mentioned, so forget renting Magnolia, Inglorious BasterRAB, Public Enemies etc. They also don't have a few old Bogart movies I looked for. Overall for me, they were really poor. I also used to go months without getting any high priority titles. I was a heavy user, so maybe that contibuted to these issues.

Blockbuster have a better catalogue, the turnaround times seem faster, and they seem to send more of the stuff that is higher on my list.

I've been with Lovefilm for 5 weeks and am already thinking of trying Blockbuster instead.
When I first joined on the free month trial I put Four Lions and From Paris with Love on my list amongst other older films.
Despite them both being high priority and everything else being medium or low I still haven't received them.
If I have to wait ridiculous amounts of time for the latest movies it kind of defeats the object for me.
I also see no reason why a modern internet/mail based company can't despatch a disc the same (working) day they receive one.
I have now received the first two of my four rentals for this month and if the next two don't include at least one of the above titles I'm off.
On top of the missing Universal catalogue and bonus discs etc counting towarRAB your allowance Blockbuster is looking more and more appealing.
I might well find that the grass is no greener, I am aware of that in which case I don't think online rental will be for me unfortunately.

I gave up on Lovefilms.

The service was attrocious.

I paid the unlimited premium and was lucky to receive two movies a week. Most often it was just one movie a week.

I got sick of it and cancelled.....and now they are offering me 3 months free prescription etc.

I just don't trust them and feel that their service is a total rip off.
