Logic Midi Running Slow On Power Mac?

Ok so I'm pretty new to Macs, I recently purchased a second hand Apple Power Mac G5.

Processor: Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
Memory 5 GB DDR SDRAM
Startup Disk: mac osx

I am a sound technology student learning how to use Logic Pro 9. Basically I can't run many midi instrument tracks at a time and now the computer is even unable to play simple chords using a basic midi controller as this puts too much pressure on the CPU. During playback I am frequently getting a system overload.

I have been told about freezing instrument tracks to reduce the CPU usage but surely if there is a problem just playing chords in then I must be doing something wrong?

I am not very experience in this area so I'm wondering if there is some settings I have wrong or something about midi setup? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can reduce this problem or how I can improve my mac in some way.

(Generally audio doesn't seem to have a problem, it's mainly just midi tracks/instruments etc)

Thanks for helping :) Much appreciated!
