LGBT: Help me educate my mom about Transsexuals?

Mom, Dad, my sister, and I all kind of got into an arguement last night about.. Yep, Trannsexuals. My mom said (basically) "I don't understand why a Male would want to change his body into a Female,only to end up as a lesbian." - My response to this was "well maybe it's because they love girls but never wanted a penis to begin with! Just because *I'M* a lesbian doesn't mean I want a penis, mom."

I don't remember all that she said, and I don't want to accidently write things she didn't say, so that was the question, i guess. I want to educate her about Transexuals (because she made it clear that she "doesnt understand them".) and I want to be able to give her information- WITHOUT giving her a huge lecture. It needs to be realistic.

My sister was saying "So you're telling me that the 4 year old boys who try to cut off their penises because they want to be a girl are just "findinf out who they are?" and my mom was like "Yes, because they don't know what they are yet." to which I argued "mom, i had crushes on girls in Kingergarten." and she said "Well, YOU were born gay. I know that already."

I don't think my mom or dad is against them, but i think they don't know a lot about them. We do have a MTF friend named Madison who ended up being a lesbian, hence where my mom got this idea.

Edit; giving links to studies is even better- My mom is a very smart woman and if i dont have names to give her, it's likely she won't believeme much.
 
Well transsexual, hun. Are Men or Women who always felt they were supposed to be the opposite sex and they get sex changes so that they feel comfortable, you don't necessarily have to like the same sex but, want to be the opposite sex.

Say that there are something in their brain that is different from normal brains

Like a part of a transgendered "womans" brain
is similiar to a woman, which makes them want to be a woman, that part of the women brain changed their thinking

while the majority of their brain is still like a normal males brain

Like you are a lesbian? a part of your brain is similiar to a male brain, that stimulates you to like women, while the rest of your brain is still and majority female

you and transgenerdered people are still both the body you are born in, its just that, a certain part of the brain is different
 
I don't know of any studies or anything like that to prove conclusively this sort of thing, but I read a book called "Luna" which i felt did an excellent job on describing Transsexuality. It is kind of corny or whatever, but nonetheless, one can really comprehend that there are some people who really are born females in a males body or vice verca after reading that book. If that's what your trying to get your parents to understand then have either or both of them read this book.
