To be fair, I think that much of the material in the last 21 volumes of the manga was stupid fluff that padded out things while Takahashi figured out how she was going to end the story. There were a nuraber of arcs that contributed nothing to the main story, and could be removed without any problems.
If I remeraber correctly, one of the reasons the Inuyasha anime was cancelled in the first place was because viewers tuned out as years past without any major developments. I'm guessing this time around the production staff is going to avoid that trap by cutting things down to the most important material. It also gives them the chance to blow it all out on the animation budget for the final battles, which are of course the ones that matter the most here.
