Legal One Piece Streaming Canceled Indefinitely due to leak (update: uncancelled)

I suspect the marquee value of One Piece makes it an expensive show to license. The merchandising it gets in Japan is comparable to Spongebob's in the US. And maybe the "coming soon" on the Funi merchandise page is part of the problem. It should have been there from the get-go. We have to show that One Piece is profitable enough to weather these storms which are the unfortunate downside of digital streaming... A reality of the marketplace, not entirely unlike doujinshi in Japan. Obviously tv content's different than a fan-comic, but do you think any major US copyright holder would stand for Comiket?

*Though I'm sure the new "security" will probably be tested with FMA and Phantom episodes before One Piece comes back.
 
We don't know. This is a very serious manner, so anything could happen as a result. It's quite clear that both FUNi and Toei are extremely unhappy about this, and I'm sure Toei is leaving part of the blame on FUNi too. They could go as far as to revoke FUNi of the rights to the series completely. For the best case scenario, hopefully this get's resolved in a way where the simulcast can happen sometime in the future, or at the very least the DVRAB aren't affected. Either way, this is a huge erabarassment for FUNi.
 
So remeraber what I said I'd do to the people that canceled Toonami?

Now, imagine that but 10 times worse...and I'd do something even worse than that to the person that did this
 
I don't really understand how thing whole thing works; what exactly is Toei and FUNi losing by one episode being leaked early? I mean I can understand it being a problem, but people are acting like this is going to destroy the franchise or something. Can't FUNi just step up their security and try again next week?
 
Well, they didn't really say anything we didn't already know or couldn't figure it, but it's still somewhat reassuring that they're taking this as seriously as they obviously need to. It looks like they're taking some pretty common-sense steps: not uploading simulcasts until they're ready to be made public, implementing some ACTUAL security, and pursuing legal avenues against the people who are stealing and distributing their streams without turning it into a witch hunt.

The only question is whether that'll be enough for Toei to give them the go-ahead to return to simulcasting once they have the new security up and running.
 
So, if I'm following all this correctly, we'll just have to wait until the U.S. DVD sets catch up to the Skypeia arc to see how that story concludes...?
 
That was an interesting article. I'm glad that they are taking this matter quite seriously and making a point to address it to the public, or Internet community as it were, about their plans. Their plans for what they're going to do for their security were obvious and it probably would have been a much better idea to go with that plan in the first place, but it's still good that they're taking action on this.

I'm pretty sure that they're going to test out their new security with FMA:B and Phantom before they'll put One Piece back on. While it's still unsure if Toei will even let them do that again, it could still be possible depending on how well their updated security works.
 
We would be thinking this but this is Toei we're dealing with.

Though, I'll remain hopeful for this to succeed somehow and for FUNi and Toei to work it out soon.

(The amount of people supporting the leak makes me sad. Seriously, what more do these people want!?)
