Least Deserving Acting Oscar Winner

Gwyneth Paltrow- Shakespeare In Love

Weakest of the nominees and she doesnt even make my top 10 for performances by actresses in 1998

My top 5 female performances of 1998
1, Emily Watson- Hilary And Jackie
2, Cate Blanchett- Elizabeth
3, Fernanda Montenegro- Central Station (Central do Brasil)
4, Rebecka Liljeberg- Show Me Love (Fu*king Amal)
5, Alexandra Dahlstr

Agree with the above. It was a travesty when she won it that year. I don't even rate her as a good actress never mind an Oscar winning one.

Brenda Blethyn was great but out of the nominees it should have been Rachel Griffiths for Hilary And Jackie

Judi Dench didnt deserve the win at all, it was nothing more than a mediocre performance

Halle Berry won it not for her talent but for that sex scene (you know what I mean, THAT sex scene), especially considering it was 'controversial' *OMG it's a white guy and a black girl together, in a sex scene no less, who would have thought it even possible*

I know it's going back a bit, but I've never really got over the shock of John Wayne winning in 1969 for True Grit. I assumed it was between Dustin Hoffman and John Voight for Midnight Cowboy.

For me it was the year when Tommy Lee Jones won over Ralph Finnes - Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive was laughable - a totally ham it up performance whereas Ralph Finnes in Schindlers List was totally amazing - his physical presence was so creepy and I thought he played the part to perfection.
I still quote it as one of my most shocking moments!

Although I rate Al Pacino as an actor, I don't think he should've won the Best Actor Oscar in 92 for Scent of A Women over Clint Eastwood's turn in Unforgiven, and similarly I think Gerard Derpadieu should've won it for Cyrano De Bergerac over Jeremey Irons. I definately agree that Halle Berry and Gwyenth Paltrow should never have won, maybe Emily Watson over Gwyenth and Sissy Spacek over Halle

Winner:
As Good as It Gets (1997) - Helen Hunt (I)

Other Nominees:
Afterglow (1997) - Julie Christie (I)
Mrs. Brown (1997) - Judi Dench
Titanic (1997) - Kate Winslet
Wings of the Dove, The (1997) - Helena Bonham Carter should have won

Winner:
Shakespeare in Love (1998) - Gwyneth Paltrow

Other Nominees:
Central do Brasil (1998) - Fernanda Montenegro
Elizabeth (1998) - Cate Blanchett
Hilary and Jackie (1998) - Emily Watson (Emily in my opinion was also better)
One True Thing (1998) - Meryl Streep

Winner:
Fargo (1996) - Frances McDormand

Other Nominees:
Breaking the Waves (1996) - Emily Watson (I)
English Patient, The (1996) - Kristin Scott Thomas
Marvin's Room (1996) - Diane Keaton
Secrets & Lies (1996) - Brenda Blethyn

Emily and Brenda in my opinion better and these are just 3 best actress oscars in 3 years

Muggsy:

Richard Burton should have won instead of Wayne in 70(not 69) for Anne of the Thousand Days.

At the post Oscar party,Wayne actually handed Rich the Oscar saying ' you should have this Richard, you deserve it....'

I'm using the same year classification that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences uses. So, the ceremony this coming 25th Feb will be for films released in 2006. Obviously it's a bit early in the year to be giving out awarRAB for outstanding achievement in 2007.

So, John Wayne won the Best Actor Oscar for 1969. And I still say the two best performances were Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman.

@ jaded

Breslan and Wahhlberg are gainign hype, as is Alan Arkin

Heeln is supposedly a lock but they havent given streep an oscar for 25 years

I think the way the voting system works should be changed, i bet half the voters are over 60. It explains why Judi dench, helen mirran and Meryl steep get nominated no matter what there in. I swear if any of those played a corpse they'd still be nom!
