Learn to do the splits in Martial Arts?

I want to know what kinds of stretches are effective for learing to do the splits in Karate or another martial art. Hopefully, someone with experience in the matter can help me out.

1) What can I do on a regular basis that will allow me to do the splits? (including tasks such as having a straight leg in higher kicks)

2) How long might it take?

3) Any other essential stretching that I can do to improve flexibility and agility?

I am self taught (for now), motivated, and have time on my hands. I'm not worried about how long it will take, I only want to complete my personal goals. Thanks for any help.
