Last Movie You Watched? (Part 3)

I have just rewatched this after a few years, having watched it twice before, and have to say that your worRAB exactly reflect my opinion of it. I tried to give it another chance, but I still just feel that it just seemed so typically Hollywood, where quantity trumps quality. On its own, it's an OK film and worth watching, but it's nothing to shout out about. It's odd that it's considered to be the best of the Alien films by some, but I suppose Cameron's trite style has to find resonance somewhere. Yes, more aliens, more explosions, more cliches, more more, and a cute kid who has to be saved no matter what. More... MORE... It's better because it has MOOOOORE!

BTW, I do agree with you about the original Alien, which still stanRAB its ground despite being over thirty years old. Good acting, great suspense and tension, real feeling of doom, and believable characters that you can care about.

Onto Alien 3 next...
 
Ladies in Lavender

Two old sisters (Judy Dench and Maggie Smith) living beside the shores of Cornwall discover a foreign, young, injured man washed up onto the shores. While looking after him, one of them develops a crush on him, bringing her into conflict with her sister. However, he soon gets interest from a younger woman who can speak his language, which just complicates matters. Quite an endearing tale, although it does meander at times.

Roman Polanski's masterpiece, starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes.

I've seen this literally dozens of times, have always loved it and along with The Wicker Man and The Omen (originals) it's my favourite horror film.

Sophie Scholl: The Final Days [2005]. Director: Marc Rothemund

True story of a German student dissident arrested for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets in 1943. The film's title is more than a big clue to the outcome but there's some fine drama along the way.
 
Salt. 7/10

Fairly routine thriller, a bit predictable and a bit implausible. It gains a good half-point by having a woman as the protagonist.
 
The Crazies (2010)

Great film. I wasn't expecting much but the filmmakers did a terrific job with this one. It's one of the few remakes that's actually better than the original.

Blade Runner 9.5/10

Wow 21 years of life and i hadn't seen Blade Runner before!i was missing out :p thought it was amazing. Definately my kind of film. Kept me riveted throughout
 
The Outrage (1964) - Virtually a scene-by-scene remake of Rashomon, which I watched a few weeks ago. I think if I hadn't already seen the original, this film would stand up on it's own merit. The transplantation from the Japanese rainforest to the Wild West gave it a slightly different feel, but basically it is the same film -- with the director using the same tricks as Kurosawa did in Rashomon (the use of shadows, extreme light and dark, in keeping with the theme of the story). Also, I liked the up-close POV in a few of the fight scenes... there's one bit when the wife character falls back and bumps the camera... it seemed surprisingly modern for a film of that era.

Paul Newman gave a great performance as the bandit, although he went a bit OTT when we heard the woodcutter's version of events at the end. I had no idea William Shatner was playing the preacher until the credits :eek:
 
Went to see it last night.

I enjoyed it but.......

The 3D aspect annoyed me (as usual). The 3D effect just doesn't seem to live up to expectations, (for me at least).

So I think I would have enjoyed the movie even more if I went to a normal (2D) screening instead.
 
Mirrormask (2005)

Twisted fairytale type fantasy thing. Disappointing. It tries for a surreal, gothic feel, but I was just so focused on how bad the CGI was I couldn't concentrate on anything else. The story was really predictable too.

13 Tzameti (2005)

Intriguing French thriller about a naive young roofer who tries to make a quick buck, but instead gets caught up in a terrifying game that could cost him his life. Really interesting film, plenty of suspense. It looked really amazing too... shot in stark black and white that gave everything a lovely crisp edge.

Apparently this was remade this year by the same director, but starring Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and 50 Cent... what... the... ffffflip? Has anyone seen it? Is it as bad as it looks in my imagination?
