House of Flying Daggers

Took a while to draw me in, but I was really enjoying it by the end. The fight set-pieces were as good as in Hero, and the setting, the backdrops and the colour palettes were amazing. I thought the story could have done with a bit more padding, and a few of the characters were a bit one-dimensional, but that's only a minor criticism. Loved the ending.
 
Repo Men (LINK)

Disappointing film. It was an interesting idea (it's based on a book) and I liked the dark comedy that's sprinkled throughout but the film ultimately fell flat with me. It's a shame too because I like the 3 main actors in it: Jude Law, Forest Whitaker & Liev Schreiber.
 
Fabulous film, Ellen Burstyn is quite astounding :)

From Paris With Love

Absurd Luc Besson action film that's like a throwback to the old Sly'Arnie 80s days.... but with Travolta in a shaved head and bad ass goatee demolishing the villains of Paris like a one man army on cocaine. It's unintentionally hilarious, completely unbelievable, mad as a box of frogs and totally OTT. Yet somehow quite enjoyable!

Made In Dagenham - 7.5/10

Buried - 7/10...might have been rated higher if my screening hadn't have had 2 couples in that just talked throughout the entire film. It got to the point where during a tense, silent part of the film I shouted at them to shut up. Made a fair few people jump lol.
 
Life As We Know It

A little long but cute and enjoyable film. It was a typical Katherine Heigl rom-com and predictable but I always know what to expect with these films. Fun way to spend the evening. :)
 
28 Weeks Later

Sequel to 28 Days Later. A virus has ravaged the UK, rendering its inhabitants as bloodthirsty zombies. However, there are a few survivors who are housed by the US Army in the Isle of Dogs, where they're meant to be safe... but are they? Starts off quite well, but does go downhill from there. I did like the way it was brutally unsentimental to some of the lead characters, but there were a few absurd plot holes that spoiled it a bit for me and it got a bit trite, too. Still, it wasn't terrible and was watchable, but nothing like the original in quality.
 
Boys Don't Cry

Based on a true story, a very harrowing tale about a transgendered teenager, who's a man feeling trapped inside a woman's body, who arrives in a small US town and does all the macho type things expected of a lot of young men there. He soon falls for a girl, who takes to his seemingly sensitive nature, but the relationship poses a problem of whether to tell the truth about his original gender to his new lover and whether she'd reject him if he does, as well as the wider ramifications if such a truth came out. Quite an intense, emotional and terribly sad tale, which is well told and acted, particularly by Hilary Swank.
 
Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D 7/10

About the right mix of plot and visuals. Probably would have been better without the 3D. Better than the previous two in the series; I still prefer the first.
 
Shakespeare in Love

A young Shakespeare falls in love with a woman who wants to act in one of his plays, but the problem is that she's to be the wife of one of the gentry. Gwyneth Paltrow stars in this period drama/comedy and gives a good performance. Still, despite that, I don't think she should have won the Oscar for that year in place of Cate Blanchett, whose portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Elizabeth was quite brilliantly done. I mean, it could have saved us the blubbing if justice had of prevailed. ;) Still, Paltrow was fairly good in this and the film generally kept my interest, despite some initial reservations.
