Thank you, Steve--my mum is feeling much better. I have indeed seen Cranford and I loved it! And Return to Cranford was finally shown here just recently. (I loved that little old lady with her cow!

) And even more I loved Elizabeth Gaskell's other story "North and South."
Now, about the way LRTC has been described in Britain, I just can't believe that it has been given such harsh criticism! Whoever has said those things has either never watched the show or is such an unhappy, cynical and sour sort of person(s) that they just feel the need to stomp on anything that is warm, and good, and filled with real human emotions. It's very sad to hear that. Despite such mean and very inaccurate reviews I'm very glad to hear that many millions of viewers still tune in for the show! We are relying on you guys to keep the show alive for us across the Pond!
Yes, here in the U.S. there are many fans of British TV. Despite the insistance of Hollywood that all people want to see is sex, violence and toilet humor, the fact remains that what people really want is a good story well told and well acted about realistic people with real human emotions--something to provide a nice little escape from the worries and the grind of every day life. There are some wonderful American TV shows out there, but it is British TV that is consistently superior, in my opinion. Your actors are actually GOOD at what they do, they aren't just empty-headed super models chosen for their sex appeal. We can actually identify with your characters and want to know them. Your writers are mature, intelligent people and it shows. Another thing I appreciate is that instead of creating a whole bunch of shows each season and then running the show into the ground when it's long lost its luster year after year, British TV makes half the amount but they are filled with exceptional quality and leave you craving more.
And as for saying LRTC is a "pale Little House on the Prairie imitation" that is just ridiculous. Believe me, I grew up watching "Little House" and while it was a good show for the first 6 seasons, it doesn't compare to Lark Rise. About the only thing I can say as far that goes is that Pearl Pratt does kind of remind me of a grown up Nellie Olson. A lot of Little House seemed like a deliberate attempt to tug at your heart strings (in every episode Michael Landon found some way to tear up and cry.) Lark Rise is much more "real" and not so manipulative. And it's not just your TV that's top of the game--my favorite books and movies are also British! Oh, another thing I find interesting happening to American television: more and more of the top shows are being cast with British and Australian actors. Maybe they are finally figuring out that if you want a good show you have to get the best actors!

I'm loving it.
