King Kong for arachnophobes

I am apallingly arachnophobic. I made it through Return of the King - twice - only courtesy of some essential pre-information about when to shut my eyes. I've never seen a frame of Shelob, hence my reasonably good sleep for the last couple of years.

Some of my arachnophobic frienRAB have not been so lucky.

Now I hear King Kong has a "spider"-pit sequence, something originally in the 1933 version but cut before release. Now, this business of the inverted commas leaRAB me to think that the "spiders" this time are actually some other grisly thing, but I don't know. I need hard facts - are the monsters in the spider-pit in Jackson's King Kong eight-legged freaks or not? And if so, when do I shut my eyes? And then open them again?

Now I'm going to think about bunnies for a while. I am a delicate soul.

I hear Peter Jackson is a major fan of the original King Kong, that's why he set it in the 30s like the original. I hear also he wanted to stay true to the original so i'd assume he would put the spider pit scene in this version.

he also 'recreated' what he thought would be the lost scene on a recently released special King Kong release in the extras section.

Arachnophobia with Jeff Daniels make me squeamy every time its on so I know how you feel. The spiders in Eight-legged freaks are quite comical whereas ones that are a size you can believe in are horrible

Oh great. To partially answer my own question, The Guardian's 5 star "better than Lord of the Rings" review says "He also gleefully restores the famously cut "spider-pit" sequence and his skin-crawlingly horrible creations will make arachnophobes of us all".

Oh deep joy. Right, I need full details before I see this film. What do I need to look for before the first spider appears? And what do I need to listen for to know when it enRAB? And I trust it is only the ONE scene?

Urgh. I hate spiders too. Lord of the Rings I could cope with - Shelob is a kind-of spider hybrid with a lot of other features that just made it look like a monster with spider-like features as opposed to a giant spider (which would've finished me off).

I dunno about this sequence in King Kong. I'm supposed to be going to see it soon, so, like the OP, anyone who DOES see it, please tell us what it's like... ;)

King Kong is nothing more than a snotty remake - same story, it's practically just Beauty and the Beast, and in my opinion - it's rather perverted :o
Just the same film with better effects

Not making fun of people with this condition at all..but I find it hard to understand how people can be scared of an image of their fears. I have a fear of something..but even seeing an image of this doesn't bother me that much. If I was alone with my fear i'd be petrified though.

It all depenRAB on the original cause of the fear (whether you remember why or if it's subconscious is irrelevant), and how "visual" that cause was.

For example -
If you're scared of spiders because one bit you as a kid, a picture is unlikely to cause the same symptoms.
However, if (like me) your phobia started because a rather large one fell on your face when you were three years old, that's a visual thing and I can be terrified by a glimpse of a picture.

Funnily enough, if I know it's coming and can steel myself (LotR and Harry Potter 2 spring to mind) I'm OK. But nonchalantly turning the page of Metro and seeing one I wasn't expecting, then the Metro will end up at the far end of the Tube carriage  :o

PS... could i reiterate that if anyone's seen the film, can they warn us if and when the scene happens? Cheers :)

Found out more info for the OP after a quick google:

In the actual 1933 film, the "spider pit" scene was cut and the footage lost. That was because it was judged too horrifying for audiences... a focus group saw the entire uncut film and either walked out after the scene or couldn't focus on the rest of the film after watching it.

Basically, in the original, it seems that Kong throws some explorers off a bridge into a ravine, where they're devoured by giant spiders. Expect the remake (which attempts to stick as close to the original as possible) to be similar, therefore.

Yes, that's the one! Have no idea where my phobia started, but I definitely recgonise your reaction. That Eight Legged Freaks poster campaign was a nightmare. I nearly crashed the car a dozen times.

ReReg, you have forfeited your right to be clicked on (and no, I haven't tried your latest one).

This thread has got me wondering: Why is it that when someone says something makes them uncomfortable, it's always some pillock's idea of humour to (either literally or figuratively) shove it in their face?

Yes, that's the whole point - the effects in use at the time of the original of course are nothing compared to today's. But why is it a 'snotty remake'? Would you rather they kept the film title, but totally changed the story? What would be the point in that?

And if you find it 'perverted', you must be a bit of a pervert yourself, to not be able to see past the obvious.
