Kawasaki KLR 250, which position on the fuel switch is OFF?

i just purchased my first bike. a 1998 KLR 250. the fuel switch is a little rusted / aged and impossible to read. I have been running the bike with the fuel switch directly up. I've come to the assumption that my switch bypasses or is just not working at all cause the bike continues to run in all 3 positions (up, left, & down). But i'd still like to know the correct positions for reserve and off. thanks.
 
When the handle is pointing to where your knee position is when mounted, it is in the off position. When the handle is pointed straight down, it is in the on position. Handle pointed to the front forks, it is in the reserve position.
