Watched it today and was so bored I was almost asleep

If like me you were around when the original Karate Kid film came out you will be very disappointed at this one.

I won't spoil it for those who won't have seen it yet, but it's bad in my opinion!

5/10

Heh heh, how many people would know the difference though?!

I loved the original (particularly the fantastic Joe Esposito "You're the Best" scene) and so for that reason, I doubt I'll want to ruin my memories of it by watching this one.

Also, I may be wrong about this, but isn't Will Smith the main man behind this movie, purely using it as a vehicle to attain stardom for his son?

It will never rival the legend that was Pat Morita and also the Kid looks a bit young- the Karate Kid was typically a teenager from the wrong side of town.

This film is basically an insult and is pretty much seen that way by most people. The original film cant be topped for what it was can it?

The fact it is about a 12 year old immediately makes its less interesting, aren

I haven't seen it yet but that is one of the main problems I foresaw with the film.
At least in the original the characters were late(er) teens and you could contemplate them fighting and getting a propper battering.

How are you supposed to show that with a 11-12 yr old?

I did catch one of the scenes which introduces Jackie Chan and saw that some of the "kiRAB" he fights were older, which they had to do other wise you would have a 60 yr old "kung fu" expert beating up little kiRAB. What kind of movie is that!

I thought the opposite. I found Jaden Smith annoying, and couldn't empathise with him, so didn't care less if he got his arse kicked or not. Also, his mother didn't seem to have a career that would lead her to have to locate to China. I don't think we even find out what she does, but she seems to be a bit blue collar, and the move doesn't quite ring true. Is China so short of labour?

Actually he does get quite a severe battering in the film and they're the scenes that made me feel very uncomfortable. And the scene you saw involved the bullies close to beating the life out of the kid before Jackie Chan stops them and tells them to go home. Instead of doing so, they try to attack him but he deflects their kicks & punches rather than beat them up.

It's perfectly understandable that audiences back in 1985 would have perhaps appreciated a remake of a 25+ year old film, as the films from that era would have represented an alien world to them, given how quickly things were continually modernising up into the 80s. But most of these youth-orientated films (like KK, Back to the Future etc) from the 80s stand up perfectly well today, as society has 'plateaued' to a certain extent in most cultural respects. Of course film has moved on immensely in terms of special effects, but these aren't the sort of movies that would benefit from being redone with a lot of CGI, the stories just don't require it. As far as I can see, the main motivation behind this was either a) Will Smith's nepotism, or b) we've now sadly got to a point where films become irrelevant and 'gay' simply for being over a few years old.

I was around then. This new one is a better movie overall. And that doesn't seem such an unusual opinion based on most of the places I've heard from.
