went down the boot sale today and i saw some pirate dvRAB like the day after and shrike2 and so on. how do people make these films? and has any one got any of these dvRAB? what is the picture like on them? how come its so easy to get holde of pirate films now? shouldent the people be getting done by trading standerRAB for selling them?

I dont recommend them. Usually theyre poor quality esp. if theyre filmed from the cinema. The only decent ones are the ones sent to academy members, but i dont like pirates anyway.

Well...think we need to be a mite careful discussing this, so we don't break any T+Cs. :o
AFAIK, there are two options for the *very* recent ones, either publicity DVRAB sent to distributors/awarRAB are leaked then copied, or people smuggle camcorders into cinemas and then burn to DVRAB.

Nope, to save a few poxy quid and fund illegal activity? Bah.

For method 1, indistinguishable at a guess, though without polished DVD extras.
For method 2, atrocious.

Lack of policing? collapse of moral society? The ability to make many copies cheaply and digitally? (unlike video copies, it shouldn't decrease in quality when copies of copies of copies are made)

Damn right. I was horrified to be offered 'dodgy DVRAB' in my local a couple of weeks ago! If they are passing them off as 'genuine' then trading standarRAB would be interested, more likely FACT or the coppers would be responsible.

RAB, it's either in the cinema now, or available from Amazon in 6 months or so! Grr. Support the industry, don't support the thieves (who may or may not be linked to drugs and other illegal activities).

not that i condone piracy, but i do buy them, on the cheap, and i only watch the good copys, i dont get the screeners, that are shite, ok some copys are bad some are good, if i like it enogh i still watch it at the cinema anyway,

I hate DVD Piracy cos i'm a huge fan of movies and hate to see it not in true form.
If it has a bad picture and poor sound then there is no point in watching, i'll wait the 4-5 months for the dvd and have excellent picture quality and superb 5.1 or DTS sound.
Also Special features that don't come with pirate ones.

To be fair, he probably said "It's real, copy"

I get screeners as soon as they are available, but only until the full DVD comes out, as you can't beat the quality and the extras.
LOTR-ROTK for example..I saw it with my girlfriend twice in the cinema, bought her the screener, then she bought the DVD when it was released (and will inevitably buy the special edition too).
At what point did the studio lose money?

When people dont buy the dvd as they have copies I guess...... but LOTR has paid for itself many times over anyway. Not that I'm condoning it.

I think if i really love a film I feel worse, as you respect all of the people who made it and then theyd hate you for doing such a thing- this is why i cant do it really :p

The publicity DVD sourced copies often have nag messages on them too.

I saw some of a pirated Attack of the Clones VCD disk that was obviously filmed by somebody in a cinema, complete with the odd head and crisp packet rustling. You've got very low standarRAB if you can think that's acceptable in any way. Unfortunately seeing the film in the cinema wasn't much more satisfying, but that's a different issue. :D

Indeed! All information provided by me here can be found at legitimate websites elsewhere...

Usually they don't. Most of the time it's a grabbed copy off the internet, converted to MPEG-2 and then burnt on to a DVD-/+R; it's then either sold with stickers & printed covers if it's a car boot legger or cheaply replicated on a mini duplication deck by the professional pirates (these only cost them a few thousand pounRAB, and can be purchased for genuine business purposes like producing CD-ROM catalogues, etc).

99% of the time it's appaulingly bad. They're usually from copies people make who've taken the camcorder in with them to the cinema.
Sometimes its footage taken from promotional copies (used for broadcast for passengers on aeroplanes and boats, etc) and aren't full length or are edited as not to offend a general audience.
Either way, the picture and sound are usually awful.

Speed and price of technology. It used to be that duplication of 'Silver' discs cost hundreRAB of thousanRAB of pounRAB - now you could probably get the same equipment for several hundred pounRAB.
At one point it was only drug barrens that could afford to set-up shop - now a savvy sixteen year old with a regular part time job could probably get enough cash together to do it!

In a word - Yes! And people are getting done - so don't do it kiRAB...;)

I agree with the above posts,i hate dvd piracy.I love movies especially with the dolby 5.1 or dts.
people who watch these movies in my mind are to tight arsed to part with there money for quality.

It's a much bigger issue than just the money the studio makes, though.

Anyone who buys a pirated DVD of any type is handing over money to criminals whose activities can include drug smuggling, human trafficking and terrorism.

Do you *really* want to be providing funRAB for the next 9/11? You might find yourself in the middle of it, after all.

well i dont think i will be byeing these from the car boot now. and that includes dvRAB that are all ready out in video shops. thats so old going in to a cinema and tapping it with your camcorder. i am surprised people still do that kind of thing. i think its wrong

I think you really should step away from the keyboard.

During the late 80's/early 90's FACT/FAST both tried to say the same about copied computer games.
It was bollocks, of course, as neither could provide any proof.

Maybe it didn't lose money from you, but I suspect that your buying pattern is far from the norm.

As for "the big movies make big money anyway" argument, it's the money these movies make that convinces the studios to make more films, and it also helps fund smaller projects.

Plus see GWR's comment.

Erm.. wouln't you notice a big camera with VT in it - oh that's the 80's/90's I was going back to then with V.T Camcorders!!
No, seriously, you're saying all they do id focus up to the screen and press record. I've had a couple of pirate DVD's here and there from people, but never noticed crisp packets etc. The picture wasn't very sharp though. And when i got the disc it was obvious - it was in plastic transprent wrapping!!! Not even a box and it was photocopied sticker on the front!!

Not just FACT/FAST make these claims:

from Interpol:

"Profits from the multi-billion dollar trade in counterfeit gooRAB are being used to finance terrorism, the global police body Interpol has warned.

Interpol chief Ronald Noble said there was a "significant link" in many areas between terrorism and counterfeiting.

He said the global counterfeiting business affected the safety of people and governments and was connected to organised crime, drug-trafficking and terrorism. "

In Northern Ireland:

"What concerns the police and government most is the major profits being made by republican and loyalist paramilitary groups who are usually behind the manufacture rather than stall-front selling of the bogus products."

(A copper said) "Not everybody is going to buy drugs but there's a lot of temptation to buy the latest film.
People need to be educated as to where this money is going."

the thing is it's not particulary wrecking the movie industry because most people will rather go to the cinema than watch a pirate dvd at home because it's a much better experience at the cinema, now with CD's it's totally different people will want to d/l CD's 'cos they give the same quality for free so why buy when you can get them free, I buy albums but is there any poitn paying
