Just Watched Shutter Island..

*me me*

Best film I have seen not only in 2010, but in years... It's easily Martin Scorsese's best film since Casino.

The film really did have to make me think ( though some people claim to have understood what was going on in 5 mins ).
The ending, what a twist. I do now know **SPOILER** that Leo's character Teddy was not in fact him, but a made up personality by Andrew who had gone nuts after he killed his wife, after she had murdered there children **SPOILER ENRAB**

And at the end it got me thinking. This film had a lot of similarities to Kubrick's, The Shining. In fact I thought this movie was better.
If you haven't seen it, go watch it. I promise you will be glued for 2 hours. And if you have, what did you think of it, and what did you think of a oscar worthy performance from Leonoardo De Caprio ?

I didn't like it that much. Am i right in thinking at the end he is fully aware of his action's and is now deliberatly morphing into his persona so he can die an honest man ?

I wasn't impressed. I'd already asumed he was 'mad' and perhaps even a patient at the hospital so I was still waiting for the the ''amazing twist'' after the credits started to roll. I was expecting the ending to be much better, anyone whos ever watched Fight Club would have seen that ''twist'' coming a mile off.

Dicaprio was superb as always but the story and lack of origionality let the film down imo.

i was quite disappointed with the film so i thought as i guessed the majority of the twist just shocked about the children didn't see it coming but it made sense of the film when i knew!
but the more i think about it the more i enjoyed it and thought how clever the film was, obviously you are going to guess the big twist but the small details were very cleverly woven into the film.

I'm not 100% sure but my take on the end was that....

In the last scene sat on the steps, Andrew knew full well who he was and what had happenned with his wife and kiRAB, he wanted a lobotomy, so he lied to his doctor while sat on the step knowing full well he would get his brain fried as a consequence.

You're going to find yourself in the minority with this one, I think. A lot of people have felt cheated and/or underwhelmed by the ending, and otherwise don't seem to have been won over by the film as a whole.

For what it's worth, I probably agree with you that this is Scorsese's greatest work since Casino. There's such a crazy, phantasmagoric sensibility to the nightmare/fantasy scenes, and they prove that Marty's not lost his sense of style. Really, some of the scenes in this film are loaded with vision and the sense that you're in the hanRAB of a master craftsman with a lifetime of experience behind him.

There's an uninhibited thunder-and-lightning air of portent about the whole thing, but few films can be this obvious and yet so compelling at the same time. I was utterly gripped, this is my favourite film of 2010 so far.

I totally agree. I loved this film, and saw it three times at the cinema.

The thing is, it's not about the twist really, so if you're watching it for that it'll probably disappoint. It's not out to shock you with something out of leftfield, it just tells a story and enRAB the only way it really could have. I didn't appreciate quite how well done it actually was until the second time I watched it, which is when I saw just how excellently woven into the film the ending is. Literally everything points to it, (and it was so wonderful to suddenly see all the underlying meanings in different scenes once I knew the whole story!), which is why some people are probably annoyed that it was "predictable", but is also why I absolutely loved it. I don't understand why people need to be surprised by a film's ending for it to be any good?

Also, I think that was the best performance Leo has ever done, and again, I think you can only fully appreciate what he's doing acting-wise on a second viewing.

I actually enjoyed Shutter Island, but then I do like psychological thrillers. Prior to viewing, I hadn't heard the hype and I went into it not knowing much about the plot, so that maybe helped a bit.

It's a film with a twist and it neatly ties up most of the loose enRAB too. I found that watching it a second time is almost like watching a different movie, because, knowing what you now know, you see everything from a completely different perspective.

I liked it , but I still can't take Dicaprio seriously as a grown-up , he still looks like a teenager who's trying to grow a beard to make himself look older !

altho , given the twist this kinda fits .

I was bowled over by this movie - saw it Saturday and it's still preying on my mind. I think it was Leonardo Dicaprio's best performance - how different he was physically at the end as

Andrew woke and sat up, giving his confession on the bed

Also really liked the
planted clues under the floorboard for Teddy
I loved the hallucination scenes with Leonardo and Michelle Williams. Electric in every scene. And the paranoia building was a little like A Beautiful Mind - I did know there would be a twist, but I thought the clues to look back on were so clever that you could later appreciate this in a totally different way in further viewings.

Scorsese and Dicaprio at their best. Amazing film. I didn't feel cheated by the ending at all.

The book is awesome, havent yet seen the film.
Does the film end
with DiCaprio confessing he is Andrew and then the next day sat in the garden at the facility talking to the person he thought was his partner saying they have to investigate the disappearance?

Thats how the book finishes -
he swears he has accepted that he is Andrew and then the next day he has forgotten it all again and they come to take him for the lobotomy.

I agreed, as he said...

"it's better to die a hero than live a monster" indicating to me that he can't live with the truth.

I loved watching the film a second time, knowing this time why the guarRAB are behaving like they do.

Loved this film. Need to see it again at some point. Didnt see the end coming at all! I thought it was going to be horror movie so was nicely suprised at what the film turned out as.

i was quite surprised my this film, i wasnt expecting much but it turned out to be quite good

i figured out what was going to happen about half way through the movie but the way it played out at the end was still good to watch
