I guessed the majority of the twist from the trailer, which disappointed me to say the least as I love a good twist. The rest of the film was alright, definitely not one of my top films of the year, but no-where near the bottom either.
I think people have a bad case of the 'shyamalan's' nowadays, it was a solidly acted film there wasn't a twist anyone that didn't know he was an inmate must not of actually been watching the film.
It was a good story with an excellent end and should of made people wonder which way they would of jumped in that situation.
My mrs got the twist without seeing the movie lol. All she knew about the film was it was set in a mental hospital and it had a twist to it at the end, she then said to me, " Leo is a mental patient isn't he at the hospital ? Thats the twist ? ".. I said yep lol.
She said the plot twist was to obvious being set in a mental hospital ( oh why cant we all be as clever as my mrs ).
Not sure if it makes me stupid anyway, because I did not see that twist coming at the end lol.
**EDIT**
Talking of twists, can you think of other films that really took you by suprise with a twist at the end ? 1 that springs to mind for me is, Vanilla Sky.
We've had the film sitting on our shelf for a while....but have just watched it and I'm just starting to watch it again now...
Whether or not you get the twist before it happens is irrelevant (we kinda got it with nearly an hour spare).....watching the film a second time is where the real enjoyment comes into it......20 minutes into my second viewing and the subtle nuances with each scene are a joy to watch.....I'm now finding myself looking at Mark Ruffalo throughout;
Mark Ruffalo struggles to remove his gun before entering the facility....makes perfect sense.
The way the inmates react to Di Caprio.....again, makes perfect sense.
The way the wardens react when being questioned...
Ruffalo's subtle nod of approval to a warden after they played along with Di Caprio's interrogation...
Ruffalo's character having a subtle go at the other wardens in front of Di Caprio for almost giving the game up by claiming a doctor had been allowed leave after such a serious breach of security....
The men's shoes in the cell.....(I think the cell was Di Caprio's)
The Machinist. I didn't realise what a brilliant script it was until I watched it again with the missus a week later. Very clever film.
(You should really ask a mod to edit tags into the OP. It's easy to accidentally read something regardless of how many times you write spoiler.)
Luckily I've seen Shutter Island, and agree, it's a brilliant film.
I really liked it the first time, but I LOVED it on subsequent viewings. The underlying meanings in every scene are suddenly just there. Quite brilliantly put together IMO.
One of my favourite scenes was:
When Leo's character is talking to the "patient" and she's telling him how she murdered her kiRAB. I didn't fully understand his reaction when I watched the first time, but the second time it was just perfect. When she's screaming at him "who are you?!" and you can tell he's on the verge of knowing, but can't/won't let it happen.
I think reading these two posts i might have to give it another go. Was really disappointed with this on first viewing, loved the beginning of the film-the feel of it etc but thought it slowly got worse. LIke others have said i could see the ending a mile off and my biggest film peeve is when things are so predictable. However i did like the slight twist in the very final scene. I really wanted to like it so hopefully a second viewing will help.
I really enjoyed the movie and after reading a few posts in this thread, I have to say I'll give it another watch sometime soon. I think it is a fantastic movie and I really enjoyed the twists and turns.
Agree with OP, saw it last weekend, bloody excellent film. I thought I was ahead of the film having sussed out what I thought was the whole plot, but it was only a small part that I had worked out, and I'm sure we were supposed to know that much anyway.... ... Does this make sense!!!! Ah well.
The soundtrack is flippin' good too, some s**t scary tunes in there.
Di Caprio's character played his alter ego Andrew so well throughout the film that I really thought he was going to bust out of there. And I was even more convinced when Ben Kingsley's character told him that he didn't kill any of the guarRAB at Dachau, when he had already confessed to the shootings to his 'partner'.
I was disappointed in it too. Saw the twist coming a mile off and the fact that Kingsley had allowed him to live out this fantasy even to the point of attacking guarRAB was complete and utter horse manure.
Just watched this on DVD. I thought it was a very good-looking film, but ultimately it's a lot of guff about nothing... Far too long considering it actually doens't take you anywhere particulalry interesting...
