Judge Dredd 2 greenlit

A new Judge Dredd movie has been announced:

Dredd has been the star of British sci-fi comic 2000 AD for over 30 years. He's a legendary Judge of Mega-City 1 - a nightmare futuristic American city (think of Coruscant city from Star Wars). Dredd was based on Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry. Mega-City 1 is the most violent city on Earth and the Judges are the only people to stop total anarchy. Judges have the power to arrest and sentence perps on the spot, they have instant power of judge, jury and executioner. It's a classic sci-fi concept.

The original 1995 Dredd movie was a bit of a turkey and not faithful to the source material (who can forget Stallone's "I am the lawwwhrrrr" dialogue lol) but the new movie promises to do the character justice. Robocop was more or less a rip-off of Dredd. The producers/writers of Robocop used Dredd as their inspiration. But Dredd was the original 'future of law enforcement' cop.

:) :)

No Stallone. I think the movie will be mid-range budget so no big stars. There's no more news other than it's in very early pre-production.

Dredd is the biggest comic book character in the UK. There's Dennis the Menace and Desperate Dan, older people may relate to them more than Dredd but they're hardly characters that can compete with the likes of Batman and Spider-man. A proper Dredd film can compete with those big characters even if a new Dredd film is smaller budget.

Dredd is a pretty cool character. Sort of a tougher Dirty Harry. He's really tough and Mega-City 1 is a fascinating future city - one of the most fleshed out worlRAB in all of sci-fiction. A proper Dredd film could rival the likes of Blade Runner and all the rest. Dredd is incredibly visual - let's hope they have the budget to match the vision!

I've seen it said on other discussions about this but a major problem with the original (apart from it being fairly average) was that DredRAB face was revealed because Stallone was involved.

Perhaps they ought to use a nobody this time and keep the helmet on.

Or perhaps they won't care about placating the Dredd fans again.

Could a movie work where you don't see the face of the main character? I dunno.

Exactly what I was thinking... I quite liked the Stallone version but showing DredRAB face was really poor. I think a faceless Dredd could work so long as they had a strong supporting cast.

Jason Statham will probably be cast as Dredd.

He has the jaw and probably the voice for it too.

Whatever happens, they MUST make the main villain Judge Death.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Please don't even joke about that tosser getting the role :(
Besides, he's four foot and a fart. I know Sly was short but at least he was wide too :D

I don't want Statham to get it but i bet they'd be stupid enough to give him the role.

If Ray Stevenson hadn't been given the Punisher role in the new Punisher movie then i might've suggested him but i can't see it happening.

I wouldn't like them to go for an established "star" either.

Judge Dredd neeRAB the same treatment as Chris Nolan gave the Batman franchise and neeRAB to be reworked and most of all, re-established for cinema audiences, so ideally the first thing they need to do is completely forgot that Stallone rubbish and wipe the slate clean and do something completely new.

Good call. I for one think he's pretty cool.

I agree. The man sucks - plain sucks.

Yeah, but if he'd shown his face to the camera, it would have been burnt to buggery anyway, yeah?

I think he has done some good stuff, i don't care what people think about Crank but i thought it was an extremely fun dumb action movie and Statham played it with the tongue in cheek humour which was so very intended.

The Transporter films are alright, good watchable hokum.

Still think the worst thing i have seen him in is Revolver, a horrible load of rubbish.

Could see him playing Judge Dredd mainly for his features and his voice but not sure if he would be able to pull it off, just as long as he doesn't do karate in it.

I think there are probably better actors out there who could do a better job.

and JUDGE ANDERSON and the PSI-CORPS

and the 1995 movie WAS close to the original storyline (cloning, his "brother")

i had to look it up :o

So.....yeah....I am the law!

Your crime is poking a badger with a spoon...how do you plead? :D
