John Carpenter's The Thing.

Just watched it again and what an amazing movie, even after all these years. The effects still hold their own, too. That head walking out the door - and the bloke's expression..

You gotta be.. :D

They don't make them like this anymore.:(

No they don't! It was kind of last in the line of the "schlock horror" genre, and one of the most intelligent and witty examples. The use of floor effects rather than CGI also add to its power IMO. You can't help marvelling at the inventiveness of the special effects - some guy(s) had to come up with designs and make them work in the real world rather than sit at a computer doing animation. Your thread has inspired me to try to track it down in the current HMV sale!

This was the first 'horror' movie I ever watched on video. It may even have been on Betamax not VHS. I remember it like it was yesterday. Especially the bit where they all had to cut their fingers with a scalpel (I was young. I was shocked!) and then putting a droplet of their blood in the petri dish. Then, can't remember who was infected, The Thing kind of mutated and then it shot up to the ceiling and spread out like a fire in a backdraft. I also remember the guys all being tied to chairs when this was done and the look of terror in their eyes. The bit where the dogs head splits into four...

I'm sure watching that film as a child created my aversion to all horror movies. Can't stand em. Why would I put myself through that? Lol. Still love The Thing though. Brilliant. :D

Yep, by the guys behind the new Battlestar Galactica TV show which is very good news IMO. Expect lots of political subtext no doubt.

a remake of this movie will be completely awful. i just know it will. nothing beats the orginal. the special effects are so special - they still make me wrinch when i see it. when i think about it (oooohhhh the Dog bit...eeeeee poor doggy) and the tension - is so tense. it almost makes me pee myself. and im suddenly that little 8 year old boy again who saw it on VHS round his mates one christmas after it was on tele. it freaked me into such a delight - i had to have more!!!

a new version will just be sorry for its self. CGI effects. its already going to be shite.

they should just simply clelebrate the original. release it again! it certainly gives many of these so called "horror" movies a run for their money.

to be honest - nothing they make anymore can possibly be frightening. we just know its CGI. or whatever.

When you say "the original", we're assuming you mean the John Carpenter remake... :)

I agree - it was Rob Bottin's non-cgi animatronics effects that made it so good!

I watched this on DVD the other month for the first time since hiring it from a video shop as a teenager. I was surprised at how good it was. The whole atmosphere was captured just right. Great special effects too even though the stomach opening and biting off the man's arms was a bit of a rip off from Alien methinks.

Still not a very nice thing to happen though. :D

Which is why Ron Moore's involvement is interesting. I've not read the novella it was based on but The Thing From Another World had a Cold War (literally!)/paranoia sub-text much like the Body Snatcher movies. Transplant that to the paranoid 21st century and you have a potential excitement factor beyond merely 'are the special effects going to be any good?'.
